Juniors win well against determined Barndarrig

AGB BARNDARRIG 4-15 0-04

AGB’S Junior ladies were out in numbers against an under-strength but determined Barndarrig side in the opening round of the Junior championship at 7.30pm, also in Ballymoney.

The Junior ladies have also embarked on the 2017 championship with a brand-new set of jerseys, kindly sponsored by Merck Pharmaceutical, Arklow.

The sun and the midges both turned out for this game and Eddie Leonard took charge of the whistle. Eve Rogers opened the scoring for AGB in the second minute and a goal from Angelika Pyciak settled the Arklow girls in the third.

Barndarrig got their opening point from a free as Aoibhín Stone made the first of many attacking runs through the centre of the Arklow defence.

Grace Hurley, Molly Byrne and Abbie added points for the home side and Mairéad Nolan added to Barndarrig’s tally with two well taken points. Goals from Grace Hurley and Emma Cox left Barndarrig with a mountain to climb in the second half.

Casey Young opened the scoring for AGB in the second half and Eve Maguire added another immediately afterwards. Casey Young’s second point was followed by Emma Cox’ second goal and the game was over as a contest at this stage.

Arklow ran in their substitutes and the fresh legs made it all the harder for the tiring legs of Barndarrig who were low in numbers on the day. Eve Rogers and Clodagh Healy sealed the AGB victory with their points in the final minutes. Excellent defending from Caoilfhinn Kavanagh, Emily Mitchell, Zoe Takacs and Kayleigh and Georgia Earls made it impossible for the visitors to penetrate the Arklow back line.

This was a tough and gruelling encounter for Barndarrig but with characteristic spirit they continued to battle to the end. They will face St. Pat’s Junior team at home in the next round while AGB will take on Éire Óg, also at home.
