MEN’S SHED

We are tiding up and hoping to display some work in progress on the community thank you day coming up on July 22 (Saturday) at the shed in killadreenan where those lucky enough to arrive, will be well fed and watered plus lovely ice cream to top it all, hope ye all can make it, it starts at midday till around 4 p.m.

There is fantastic interest in our ongoing ‘Sunflower’ contest, some have reached 86 inches and still growing, and we have received word from Met Eireann that they request the owner (s) to fix a winker light to the top of those in case of air planes-flying into them, I believe there is also an letter marked urgent in the post box at the shed from Nasa the space agency (wonder what that’s about), it’ is hoped to get an independent judge to proclaim the tallest flower at the community day, but this will only be after an inspection of the soil around the base of the tallest flower to determine if any illegalities are afoot, such as rogue fertiliser, as complaints have already been made to management, it has also been noted of late that the chicken run is exceptionally clean, and furthermore some rather smelly concoctions have been uncovered, let’s hope all is above board, so come on over and join in the shenanigans on the day.

NEWTOWN ICA

The members of our Newtown Guild recently held their July meeting before they break for the summer, guests on the night included Shay Cullen, chairman Wicklow County Council, who gave a very informative talk on plans, and indeed recent changes happening to our village, thank you Shay.

Dr Brendan Cuddity, Wicklow Hospice, gave an update to our members of current progress on the planned start-up of the Hospice at Maghermore, and our president Dympena Davis presented a cheque to the Doctor to help towards funds being raised for this vital service. These money presented were partly raised by our annual cake sale and raffle towards the costs of our senior citizens Christmas party and charities chosen by our members.

We will be back meeting once again on September 4 (Monday) in the community centre at 8 p.m., and are always ready to welcome new members, so think about it ladies. We wish you all throughout our community, a happy and fun filled summer and holiday time.

Well done to all the boys and girls who played and played the games in a very sporting manner. Finally well done to everyone for all their assistance throughout the competition and here’s to the MWC 2018 next season.

At the recent AGM of the WDSL it was decided courtesy of a vote to move the WDSL season to a calendar season. This means a year ahead of a directive from the FAI that the WDSL will have a ‘short season’ followed by a ‘long season’. The ‘short season’ will start beginning of September 2017 and finish the end of November 2017. The new season or long season will commence end of Feb/beg. of March 2018 and will finish in November 2018. There will be breaks during the course of the season to facilitate state exams etc. We will post further details as we get them.

Also in another initiative and also due to the amount of girls playing throughout the WDSL the league are looking at setting a girl’s league at under-12 and under-14 and if this venture proves successful the league will look to extend it to all age groups.

The proposal is to run the girls’ football every two weeks and all players can double up on their mixed team within their club. Again as we get more information we will post it here.

We have three players celebrating a birthday this coming week and they are Albie Chance from the under-eights and Jack Coughlan and Martin Reinhardt from the under-11s. Happy birthday, lads, from everyone at Newtown Juniors FC.
