Pat’s edge out AGB Saints see off Arklow side to book place in Senior final

at Newtown ST PATRICK’S AGB 0-9 0-7

NEWTOWN provided the backdrop for the first of the Wicklow Ladies Senior semi-finals between two fine skilful teams from the east coast in Arklow Geraldine’s Ballymoney and St. Patrick’s.

Both these teams have vibrant youth policies and this was evident throughout the game as most of the players on both sides were drawn from the 16 – 20 age bracket.

In a match which ebbed and flowed and was well refereed by Maurice Mulcahy, following a long trip from Newry, first AGB then St Patrick’s were in the ascendency with Sarah Delahunt’s free taking to the fore along with some eye catching scores from play.

At half-time the blue and white of St Patrick’s led on a score line of 0-05 to 0-04 .

The second half was an absorbing contest with both defences working really hard and both, in truth, had the measure of their forward opponents.

Entering the last five minutes St Patrick’s held a two-point lead courtesy of Sarah Delahunt and Emer McNulty and despite laying siege to the St. Patrick’s goal, AGB were unable to raise the green flag they coveted.

Best for St Patrick’s were Sinead McGettigan, Sorcha Doyle, Jennifer Lyons, Sarah Delahunt and Lucy Dunne while Annemarie Keegan, Aine O’Reilly, Niamh Arthur and Jessica Hurley were the pick of the AGB side.

Both sides played the match in a sporting manner and the tightness of the game kept the massive crowd of supporters enthralled.

Both sets of supporters should be commended on their respect for their teams and it was heartening to see players and supporters mingling after the game discussing what was one of the best matches of the year. St Patrick’s now await the winners of the Blessington v. Tinahely match which will be played this evening (Wednesday) at 7.30pm in Baltinglass.

Scorers - St Patrick’s: Sarah Delahunt 0-05, Sinead McGettigan 0-02, Rioghna McGettigan 0-01, Emer McNulty 0-01.

AGB: Aine O’Reilly (Sr) 0-03, Doireann Kavanagh 0-02, Aine O’Reilly (Jr) 0-01, Annemarie Keegan.
