Contrary hands were the order of the evening this week and accusation­s of fixing the deals were muttered by some. However that is the challenge of the game; not knowing what cards you are going to be faced with each time and trying to get the most number of tricks from what cards you and your partner have been dealt. As a player said on the night at least one pair after each hand played will be happy. Either the pair who makes their contracted number of tricks or the opposite pair who defeat the attempted contract and are awarded penalty points for their efforts. Last week was a frustratin­g night for many pairs. Coming out on top were Marian O’Sullivan and Caroline Brown who enjoyed a commanding lead over second placed pair of Catherine King and Eithne Smith. Larry Ryan and Billy Dunne were close on their heals in third spot. It was a pleasure to welcome Clodagh O’Reilly after a long absence, and with her partner Evelyn Cullinane, taking fourth place on the night.

This week again saw the return of the new beginners to this card game for the third instalment of tuition for absolute novice players. It seems more understand­ing of the shape and structure and objective of each hand dealt was gleaned amongst the laughter and banter that accompanie­d the first hour of the evening from 6.30 p.m. to 7.30 p.m. Any one can come along on any Wednesday they choose and avail of the free hour long introducti­on to the game.
