TY’s attended the AXA Road Safety Show in the Royal Marine Hotel in Dun Laoghaire on Monday, October 2. The girls learned a lot about road safety and the dangers of poor driving.

Statistics show that it is new drivers between the ages of 17 and 24 who are mainly involved in road traffic accidents, which makes this safety show of particular relevance to secondary school students.

The students had the privilege of meeting the emergencies services from the Gardaí, firemen and paramedics who all told their own story about one particular case. It was upsetting but so real and affected all in the room.

Even though it was a day full of shocking stories it was extremely beneficial for all who attended and the students enjoyed it and certainly took away with them the

Well done to the Under-19 and Under-16 Basketball teams who travelled to Loreto Dalkey on Tuesday the third. They played great matches but unfortunately were beaten closely. Well played girls.

The fifth and sixth year basketball team travelled on Thursday the fifth to Rosemont, Sandyford and played a very exciting match in which they won by three points – well done girls.

A big thank you to the following students who have volunteered to be members of this year’s Form six Sports Committee: Rachel Armstrong, Hugh Bradshaw, Harry Noonan, JJ Power, Harold Stephenson, Luke Thompson.

FIRST YEAR RUGBY

The boys had their first run out in a triangular tournament with Temple Carrig and Gonzaga. The lads had their first run out against their near neighbours with Scott Fitzpatrick and Calvin Kirya crossing the white wash in a one score defeat. Zak Hastie and Darragh Ivanoff putting in notable performances. We were unlucky to lose jack noble through injury along a try saving tackle.

In the second match EGS really showed their class with Eoin Gavigan controlling affairs. Their were notable cameos from the off loading prop James Waldron and the speed machine Harry Stevens. EGS ran out comfortable winners and look forward to their next nun out.

Another busy week for our transition years has seen a flurry of activity taking place.

In the YSI program our students are busy launching their get active campaign aimed at the first and second years and promoting a healthy lifestyle and positive exercise choices. Also this week our bakers had to negotiate batter week.

A vast (and tasty) array of pancakes of all shapes and sizes were on display with some really creative ideas and ambitious bakes.

We have also started collecting the thesis proposal forms from the students. These are the first step in the process of completing the thesis. All ready we have some really exciting ideas, from drones to boat restoration.

In adventure sports the groups negotiated the Vartry river in kayaking and also enjoyed abseiling down the waterfall in the Devils Glen.

Finally the highlight of the week was having Revenue and Customs come down to us from Dublin airport along with two k9 companions. They talked to the students about their work and the issues they are faced with combating smuggling of various different substances. The talk ended with two fantastic demonstrations from the dogs. James Galligan being expertly sniffed out as a money launderer with over €5,000 found in his pocket .... Chloe Spurling was also found to have smuggled

Congratulations to our Senior Choir, who performed superbly at the CEIST Education Conference in Athlone on Thursday, September 28,

The girls, under the direction of Ms McKenna and accompanied by Mr Bonner, were simply excellent and wonderful ambassadors for their school. CEIST are our school Trustees and the invitation to perform is a recognition of their wonderful achievements in recent years.

BASKETBALL

St Mary’s Senior Basketball team opened their under-19 East Leinster League campaign with a win on Tuesday against a very strong Coláiste Chill Mhantain side. An MVP performance by Lauren Wynn saw SMCA run out 43-40 winners in a game of great skill and speed. Well done on a great start to the season.
