AVOCA TIDY TOWNS

We are very happy with our 2017 Tidy Towns Results, we had an increase of two marks on last year, representing an increase of 20 marks in the past four years, we are very pleased to have received another increase on marks and an really positive result sheet. This will be used to plan our work for 2018 with plans already under way for 2018.

We are currently second in our category in Wicklow and fifth overall in Wicklow. Now that the results are out we want to thank everyone who helped get this great result for 2017 – Judging is within the Speed Limit Signs with consideration to the litter and condition of the approach roads.

As the summer ends and we take time to ponder the report over the winter a word of thanks to Shelton Abbey Open prison who donated a vast amount of the wonderful flowers around the village this year, to Myles Smith and Martin McAndrew who spent evenings planting and potting them before they were placed around the village, to our watering crew Dinny and Eddie Ivers, who ensured they were kept watered, and also for making up the boxes on the bridge which brought very positive comment.

Thanks also to the people who adopted areas to look after and tend to the planters in that area, Fiona Morris, who looked after the area Knockenree/Avoca Handweavers, Ger Holt, who looked after the bed, planter and verge on the meetings road, to the volunteers and residents of all the housing estates the comments reflect all your hard work and contributed to our great result. The support of the Business Community in the village by ensuring beautiful floral pots planters window boxes and baskets were well placed and they kept the areas around their businesses swept and litter-free this also contributed to the great report. We cannot forget our three CE worker George and the two Micks, who ensured the weeds were kept under control, litter was picked daily, grass was cut and brightened up many areas with paint, their work in the village is invaluable.

Thanks to Bill Porter and Parnell AC for their help and support with our Red Kite Relay Race. Finally, thanks to all the councillors, volunteers, Litter pickers, Clubs, groups and Associations, who have supported and continue to support Avoca Tidy Towns, we have many volunteers in Avoca, who do it to make Avoca a litter-free clean area to live and welcome visitors to. Thanks also to everyone who support our weekly fundraising, this fundraising is what makes the project possible, we cannot forget our long term volunteer Sammy, who is out and about everyday making sure no piece of litter is missed or blade of grass forgotten.
