-

SEAN Allen capped his boxing career with a fine exhibition against Olympian Darren O’Neill from Paulstown in the Arklow Bay Hotel last Friday night.

Both boxers traded punches non-stop for the three rounds and the crowd thoroughly enjoyed the performance.

After the final bell Arklow Boxing Club made a special presentation to Sean in appreciation of all his work and in appreciation of the Irish titles he won for the club during his career.

Sean also represented An Garda Siochana at international level and boxed in world championships in U.S.A.

Sean then made a presentation from the club to Head Coach Jim Moore in appreciation of his years of coaching at the club.

Jim says that MAYBE in the not too distant future another Sean Allen (7) may take up the tradition of the Allen family which started with Seanie Allen boxing for Marian arts boxing club in Arklow in the 50s.

In another presentation Leanne Doyle was presented with the Peter Kenny memorial trophy as the most successful boxer in 2016, winning Irish and Leinster titles.

In addition to the main event the supporters were treated to a full programme of boxing starting in a three-way exhibition between Luke Mulhall, Paul Moore, and Ross Farrell all from the Arklow club.

This was necessary as their opponents did not turn on the night. All three performed great in an entertaining bout.

Darragh O’Connor started well against Darragh Duncan Rochford by using his long jab but in the second round he fell behind and lost on a split decision.

In the only female contest of the night Niamh Malloy from Arklow showed star quality against Roisin Balph of Sacre Couer.

The Arklow debutant scored at will with both hands and was particularly impressive with her straight right. Niamh won a unanimous decision.

Josh Whitmore gave a fine demonstration of power punching against Adam Farrell of Holy Family, catching the Drogheda boxer with solid rights to head and body. Josh won a unanimous decision.

Jason Breen was Arklow’s unluckiest boxer to lose a split decision to Luke Mooney from Glasnevin.

Jason scored well with solid shots to the head and seemed to have done enough but two judges went for the Dublin boxer.

Matthew Tyndall got Arklow back on track against David Nevin from Holy Family.

Matthew scored with solid hooks to the head and body to win all three rounds.
