Impressive Avondale overcome St Mary’s

Avondale CC 6-13, St Mary’s College Arklow 5-4:

This Girls Senior football A semi-final was played in Ballinakil­l on Monday of last week.

Avondale had the assistance of a strong wind in the first half and used it to the full with some fine scores.

St Mary’s had plenty of chances but found scoring difficult with their only score coming in the last minute of the half. At half time Avondale led by 4-9 to 1-0.

St Mary’s put up a much better performanc­e in the second half. They did add four goals and reduced the margin to eight points at one stage but Avondale reasserted in the final stages to add a further 1-1 for a well deserved win.

Referee was Eddie Leonard (St Patrick’s).

Kerri Ann Murphy was outstandin­g for the winners and scored 2-8 while Lauren Carter added 2-2.

Others to impress for Avondale included goalkeeper Aoife Redmond, full back Natalie Farrell and Ava Carter.

St Mary’s had fine players in Aoibhinn and Roisin Stone, goalkeeper Eve Rogers and Liodán Kavanagh.

Avondale will now meet St Kevin’s CC Dunlavin in the semi final.

Senior hurling Arklow Schools David’s Greystones 5-8, St 1-2:

The semi-final of the Senior hurling B championsh­ip took place in Pearse’s park on Thursday.

Arklow looked the better team from the moment referee Pat Hickey got the game underway and went on to lead by 2-6 to 1-0 at half time.

St David’s had more possession in the second half but came up against a strong Arklow defence. Arklow will now play West Wicklow Schools in the B final.

There were some fine hurlers on both sides with Owen Dorgan, Aaron O’Dwer Robinson and Neil Browne to the fore for David’s while Shane Mellon did well for much of the game for Arklow with Dylan Furlong and Quentin O’Reilly also impressing.

Leinster Juvenile football

Scoil Chonglais Baltinglas­s 5-13, Blessingto­n CC 2-2: A strong Scoil Chonglais team qualified to represent Wicklow in the Leinster juvenile D football championsh­ip with a convincing win in Blessingto­n.

The winners led by 3-9 to 0-1 at half time. Blessingto­n were much improved in the second half without ever looking like bridging the gap.

In the play off for third place Avondale CC beat Colaiste Chraobh Abhann Kilcoole by 7-5 to 1-8.

Boys junior football leinster qualifier: Avondale CC 3-15, Colaiste Chill Mhantain 6-6.
