Hunt for escaped prisoners

-

November 1992

A WIDESPREAD Garda hunt was underway for two Dublin men who escaped from custody while being held in a cell underneath the courthouse in Wicklow town on Tuesday afternoon last.

The dramatic break came just a short time after the men were remanded in custody from Wicklow Circuit Court when a request to have their cases transferred to Dublin was agreed to by Judge MP Smith.

The escape was made by removing a pane of glass from the window and climbing out through the narrow space between the bars which security men believe may have been pulled back to some degree to make an easier exit.

The men who escaped aged 19 and 21 and both hailed from Dublin.

Both were currently serving sentences and had appeared before the Circuit Court on charges related to an alleged serious incident in Blessington last year. They wanted their cases heard in Dublin.
