FUN RUN 2017

In what was the first and very successful CCM Fun Run 2017, the school saw over 400 students take part on a crisp but sunny Wednesday morning last week. The school community really came together on many fronts, as Teachers, Mentors, management and parents all assisted in making the event to be a great success. A big well done to all the medallists, students and teachers and everyone else who took part.

A special thank you must go to all stewarding teaching staff, who provided a very safe and secure environment and a special word of thanks goes to Maureen Byrne and Tara Bell King, who brought massive experience and assistance to the finish and the overall running of the event in CCM Thanks, in particular, to the drivers of this event, our PE Department, who coordinated the Run and made sure everything was in place.

A big thank you must be extended to local businesses who sponsored the event on the day; the CCM parents’ association, Centra, Rathnew and Byrne’s Furniture and Gifts, who all provided refreshments post-race. Thanks must also be extended to Tim Grummel for the clock and gantry, Noreen O’Reilly for the starting horn and Sodexo, who provided a professional set up for all to engage within. Finally, thanks to Luke Merrigan, who entertained from his DJ desk.

Well done, of course, to all the participants and huge congratulations to all the medallists. The overall Boy’s winner in an impressive time of 15: 30 minutes was Transition Year student, Joe O’Shea. What a fantastic achievement, well done Joe. The joint Girl’s winners were Aimee and Bonnie Bell King, the First Teacher Home on the day was Mr O’Leary and the Best Effort Award went to first Year Joseph Newsome for a great run.

Once again, with excellent planning, positive interactions and a sense of fun coupled with real purpose, we had a day that we can all be proud of and a positive memory that will stay with all who were part of this inclusive event.

IRELAND RUGBY CAP Congratulations to fifth Year student, Mark Nicholson, who played for the under-18 Ireland Club side in Portugal last Saturday week. Well done Mark.

CONDEMNED TO REMEMBER

On Monday, November 6, all TY students made their way to Dundrum cinema to watch the documentary ‘Condemned to Remember’ which is narrated by Holocaust survivor Tomi Reichental.

To celebrate his 80th birthday Tomi takes a journey across Europe to not just remember the holocaust which happened over 70 years ago but to focus on the need to ensure such an atrocity never happens again. This point, and the important role the young people of today have to pass on Tomi’s and other survivors’ stories, was further discussed when Tomi himself and the film’s director joined us after the credits ran for a questions and answers session.

The documentary was an ex- TY student Joe O’Shea, who was the overall winner of Coláiste Chill Mhantáin’s Fun Run last week. Joe was presented with his winner’s medal by Tara Bell King of the Parents’ Association.

cellent combination of historical footage and modern day news. It was thought provoking and, as Tomi has said himself, it is now in the hands of the youth of today to decide how events like the holocaust should continue to be remembered and commemorated.

‘We are condemned to remember but not with hatred or revenge in our hearts’.

TRIP TO SHARPESHILL

LCA2 had an enjoyable and interesting afternoon on a visit out to the WSPCA, Sharpeshill as part of a key assignment on their VPG module on community work. They were given a very informative talk by Linda from Wicklow SPCA They learnt about the history of Sharpeshill and the work they carry out there. Students were all to be complimented on their behaviour. Thanks to Marion Reardon for accompanying us on the trip.

GEOGRAPHY EXCURSION

Second Year students went on the Geography trip last Tuesday and did a great job representing the school. While it was absolutely freezing up in Glendalough, the students made great efforts to fill in the worksheets that were provided to them as part of their study.

In First Year the topics of rocks, rivers, glaciation and ordnance survey maps were covered in class and the students got to see some of the features and study their texture and composition first hand. It was a good revision tool for their Junior Cycle study of Geography; the trip is highly recommended for JC Geography.

The tour guide noted our students’ interaction and commented on how enthusiastic they were, which was lovely to hear at the end of the day.

CONGRATULATIONS

A big congratulations to the St Pat’s girls, Lucy Hobbs, Zoe Byrne and Molly Hodgkinson, who won the Division 4 Wicklow League Final last Monday week night.

BOYS GAELIC FOOTBALL

Under-14 SOUTH LEINSTER B BOYS GAELIC FOOTBALL – CCM 3-7 Gorey CC 3-18: We played our

final game of the championship on Friday, October 27, in splendid weather conditions in CCM the game today was a much closer affair than our last two outings, in this championship.

The lads applied themselves well and were only down by five points at half time, as the second half progressed Gorey CC pulled further away but with Evan Dwyer at full back in great form the score could have been a lot different while in the forwards Shane Marah move to full foward he showed a great eye for the posts with three fine points from play and Ethan Allen with two fine goal that he worked well before finishing to the net.

RUGBY BLITZ

The day of the break saw, not one, but two ‘rugby teams from CCM travel to a blitz in Carlow RFC With a good mix of experience and girls new to rugby, both teams began well in their respective matches as they were introduced to the rules of tag. It didn’t take long for the girls to find their feet and they quickly began to build momentum and confidence from match to match, their efforts highlighted by tries from Casey Scott, Helena Pestrajakova, Amy O’Doherty, Holly O’Toole, Lauren Stapleton and Ciara Brennan but tonameafew.

The highlight of the day CAME at the end when, with newfound confidence and skill, the two CCM teams went head to head in a modified contact game. The girls wish to thank George for his help and training along the way and they look forward to the next blitz in the coming months.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

The senior CCM girls had their first league match today away to St David’s Greystones. The girls found it difficult to get going and let in a few scores early in the first half. The backs then started to work together and Amy O’Doherty and Holly O’Toole stopped several shots from the St David’s team. The mid field of Lucy McGettigan and Weronica Kuzio also worked well, helping out the defenCe. However CCM were down by half time. In the second half, Lucy

Hobbs did very well in the forwards and scored two goals and three points. However, this wasn’t enough and St David’s went on to win the match. The girls have their second match of the league next week.

The CCA Transition Year students attended the Laughter Lounge in Dublin on Thursday, November 9, to see Ger Carey’s one man show of ‘A comic journey into the teenager’s mind.’ This is one of the highlights of the TY calendar and everyone thoroughly enjoyed Ger’s energetic and hilarious performance.

SCHOOL MUSICAL

The rehearsals for the school musical High School Musical are now up and running, with the cast doing a script and song run through on Tuesday, November 7. The musical team were very happy with the commitment and attitude of this year’s cast. We are sure it will be a great show.

The Student Council will be organising an LGBT week which takes place on November 22.

Coláiste Chraobh Abhann had great success in a number of races in the Wicklow Schools’ Cross Country Race that took place on Tuesday, November 7, in St Gerrard’s in Bray. All races were 1.6km or a mile run. Congratulations to Eve Leacy, who won the Second Year race. In the TY race CCA took all the honours with Oisín Cullen taking first place, Sam Ireland second and Dylan Symes third.

In the Senior Race, Troy Scully just lost out on first place on the last sprint to the line, coming in a close second. Sarah Hayes won the Senior Girls’ race with a very impressive race with a fantastic performance by Stevie Stokes, who took third. Well done to everyone involved. We are very proud of all your performances.

LEAVING CERT ART TRIP

The fifth and sixth year art students enjoyed a trip to the National Art Gallery of Ireland on Tuesday, November 7, to study the new exhibition that is currently displaying the works of the Irish artist Frederic William Burton. Burton, who was born in County Wicklow, was a Victorian watercolour artist and his famous painting meeting on Turret Stairs (1864) was voted Ireland’s favourite painting in a public vote by RTÉ in 2012.

JUNIOR DRAMA

Rehearsals for the CCA Players’ performance of 12 Angry Jurors began this week with our first full read through taking place on Wednesday, November 8. Ms Hennessy and Mr Ó Súilleabháin were delighted with how the rehearsal went and are very happy with the commitment shown by the students. This large cast will be performing the play in April and we are greatly looking forward to the production. You can follow the weekly progress of the rehearsals on Facebook CCA Players.

BOYS SOCCER

CCA V WOODBROOK – A fantastic performance from a very confident CCA side saw the team go 1-0 up early in the first half through a Josh Odlum goal. CCA got a second just before half time, with a penalty that was again converted by Josh Odlum. It was a great display of teamwork and determination that saw this young CCA team beat Woodbrook College by two goals. Hopefully the team will now progress to the latter stages of the competition.
