HISTORICAL SOCIETY
The architectural grace notes of Dublin’s colonial past, as well as the wonderful grace notes of John McCormack singing Il Mio Tesoro, all featured in the Society’s recent lecture by Neal Doherty. He has written the Complete Guide ot the Statues and Sculptures of Dublin and is a travel guide with Fáilte Ireland. His illustrated talk was, in fact, a most entertaining tour of significant sculptural landmarks in the capital and his engaging presentation would surely prompt one to return and look anew at our cultural legacy.
He also spoke about the more recent works of artists, Óisin Kelly and Rowan Gillespie, whose historical perspectives were so very different to that of their imperial forebears. The latter’s bronze Famine Figures is one of the most extraordinarily poignant and telling pieces of sculpture ever.
The lecture was held in the new venue, the RDA annex. December’s lecture will be held in Glendalough Cultural Centre when Joan Kavanagh will speak on Artistic Representations of Glendalough.
