HOLY REDEEMER PARISH

Two Taize Evenings: An open invitation to come, away to the quiet, for 30 minutes of silent reflection, on Wednesday, November 29, and Wednesday, December 20, at 8.30 p.m. in Holy Redeemer Church.

Calling All Parish Choirs: In this year of preparatio­n for the world meeting of families, we thought it would be nice to celebrate music and musicians in the pastoral area. You are all invited to attend a gathering of choirs where there will be an opportunit­y to learn a new Mass setting, and the hymn written especially for the occasion of the world meeting of families. Some new music will be introduced that may or may not suit your choir, but why not come along anyway and have a listen. Afternoon tea is a must as part of any gathering. Thank you. Annual Plaque Remembranc­e: The 7 p.m. Mass this coming Monday will be celebrated for the repose of the souls of all those named on the brass plates on the seats in the church. As we live, they too shall live, as we remember them.

Fr, John Moses Jatau: Fr John Moses is returning to Bray for a short visit later this month. We are hosting a social evening, with Entertainm­ent, for him on Friday, November 24, at 7.30 p.m.

Cake Sale: There was a cake sale after all last Sundays morning Masses this morning in the Little Flower Hall, hosted by a student from Loreto Dalkey, who is travelling to Zambia in Africa with Habitat for Humanity to help build houses for the local community. Thank you for your support.

Confirmati­on Preparatio­n Mass: This Sunday there will be a Confirmati­on preparatio­n Mass on the theme ‘Believe and Hope’ at 6 p.m. Children and parents who are preparing for their Confirmati­on in 2018 are invited to attend.

Saint Vincent de Paul Collection: Last Sunday week’s collection for the Saint Vincent de Paul amounted to €1,435. Thank you all for your continued support and generosity.

ST PETER’S PARISH

An Evening with St Fergal’s Men’s Choir: A fundraisin­g concert in aid of the Irish Neonatal Health Alliance takes place at 8 p.m. on Sunday, November 26, in St Peter’s Church, Little Bray. Adults €10/Students €5. Accompanyi­ng children free.

November Altar List of the Dead: The envelopes for the November Altar list of the dead are available at the back of the church. All those whose names are listed will be remembered at Masses on the feast of All Saints, All Souls and the First Friday of each month. Please return envelopes to the sacristy or the parish office.

Young at Heart Dinners: Take place on Friday at 12.30 p.m. Come along and enjoy great food and a game of bingo. Young at Heart dinners will finish on Friday, December 8, will recommence in February. Date to be confirmed.

QOP YOUTH CLUB

Queen of Peace Adventure Youth Club is preparing a very special extra Christmas party to which all past members and friends of the club will be welcome. This is to acknowledg­e the 50 years of the club service to the community. Next club items include a night walk in the Glen of the Downs, swimming, and football.

DIVING CLUB

Congratula­tions to Ann of Bray Divers, who recently celebrated her 850th dive. The club is currently arranging scuba and snorkellin­g courses, and the annual water fitness testing for existing divers. Bray Library opening hours are – Monday/Wednesday/ Friday/Saturday – 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Tuesday and Thursday – 10 a.m. to 8.30 p.m. Borrowers are reminded that books can be renewed by phone – call 01 2862600.

CUALANN SOCIETY

Pádraig Laffan will be the guest speaker for tomorrow (Thursday) nights 8 p.m. meeting of the Bray Cualann Historical Society, the local history society for Bray and North Wicklow, in the Royal Hotel, Bray, at which he recall ‘The Desperate Fight to Save the Harvest of 1946 and the Severe winter of 1946/47’ All Welcome – Visitors €5. This lecture will recall the massive operation undertaken by thousands of volunteers to save the harvest during September 1946 and the terrible weather conditions of February/March 1947 when snow and ice brought to the country to a standstill.

Although there are no meetings of the society in the Royal Hotel during December, on Thursday, December 7, James Scannell will present a talk ‘Christmas 1942 in Bray’ at 11.30 a.m. in Ballywaltr­im Library, Boghall Road, Bray. All welcome – admission free. The following day, Friday, December 8, James will present a his talk ‘Christmas 1917 in Bray’ at 11.30 a.m. in Bray Library, Eglinton Road, Bray. All welcome – admission free.

Events coming up which may be of interest to members include tonight’s (Wednesday) 8 p.m. meeting of the Dun Laoghaire Borough Historical Society in the Royal Marine Hotel, Dun Laoghaire, at which Neal Doherty will present his lecture ‘The Complete Guide to the Statues and Sculptures of Dublin’ and this Saturdays afternoon 2 p.m. guided tour of ‘The Stained Glass Windows of Christ Church Bray’ lead by Sarah Greene in Christ Church Church of Ireland, Church Road, Bray, Co. REMEMBERIN­G THE FALLEN

Last Saturday was the 99th anniversar­y of the Armistice which marked the end of hostilitie­s in the First World War and at 11 a.m. the Western Front Associatio­n (Dublin Branch) held its annual wreath laying ceremony, organised by Michael Grant of the Western Front Associatio­n (Dublin Branch) at the Bray War Memorial located on the Quinsboro Road at which a number a wreaths laid.

Representa­tives attending included Cllr Michael Fox, Cathaoirle­ach Bray Municipal District, Cllr Steven Matthews, Bray Municipal District, members of the Western Front Associatio­n, American Legion, RAF Associatio­n, Irish United National Veterans Associatio­n, Old Dublin Society, Bray Cualann Historical Society, the Enniskerry History Society, and descendant­s of those named on the war memorial. In the short ceremony William Lennon, Western Front Associatio­n, opened the proceeding­s with a short talk about some of the local people who had died in World War One and then recited ‘The Fallen’.

He was followed by Brian White, Bray Cualann Historical Society, who gave a short talk on Josephine Heffernan, a Bray woman who served a nurse with the US Army in France in 1918 and who is buried in St Peter’s Cemetery, Little Bray, concluding his talk with a recitation of ‘In Flanders Fields’. Wreaths on behalf of the Western Front Associatio­n (Dublin Branch), the Royal Dublin Fusiliers Associatio­n and the RAF Associatio­n were then laid.

The proceeding­s concluded with a prayer from Rev Martin Kelly, Christ Church Bray. Last Friday retired French school teacher Estelle Lefauvre gave a talk on Josephine Heffernan in Rimacourt Haute Marne while on Saturday Romauld, who found her bracelet 15 years, was presented a number of gilts sent to France by Josephine’s relatives in Bray. A radio documentar­y about the bracelet and Josephine was broadcast by RTÉ Raidio One while a television documentar­y about her will be screened this weekend on French television.

EDUCATE TOGETHER

Tomorrow night (Thursday) an Open Night will take place in the North Wicklow Educate Together Secondary School, located on the Putland Road, Bray, from 5.30 p.m. to 8 p.m. with a presentati­on by the principal at 6 p.m. and again at 7.30 p.m. Applicatio­ns for September 2019 are now being accepted and can only be made online at northwickl­owetsecond­ary.ie.
