ART WEEK

A number of activities, including a poster competition, a ceramics demonstaration, sand animation and a face casting workshop, ran in the school last week for Arts Week.

On Wednesday 52 First Year Art students travelled to Omniplex Arklow to watch ‘Loving Vincent’, the world’s first fully painted feature film. The film investigated the mystery that surrounded the death of artist Vincent Van Gogh. This trip gave students an insight into the life and work of the great master in advance of a painting module in their art classes.

All Second Year Art students worked with glass artist Sinéad Brennan, who discussed and displayed her work. This initiative was a great success for all involved. The students are working on a glass panel to represent the school, linking in the school crest, colours and sculpture. The students involved carefully cut glass into specific shapes using various glass techniques. We look forward to showing the finished piece once finished. This highly successful week culminated in the launch of the school’s Art and Digital Design Club.

Many thanks to Ms Philbin and Ms Griffin for assisting with the judging on the day.

On Tuesday night our Concern Debating team of Katie Docherty, Luke Duffy, Trinity Dockery and Lhamo Fitzsimons (Captain) had their third debate of the league against St Mary’s College, Arklow. We were opposing the motion ‘Young people today are indifferent to the problems of the developing world’.

The proposition put up a good fight and painted a grim picture of how young people really don’t care about anything going on outside the realm of their mobile phones. We held fast though and gave numerous examples of young people, like Malala Yousafzai, who are fighting to make the world a better place for the most vulnerable.

The adjudication panel didn’t take long to decide and we walked away victorious. The team have their last debate of the league against Presentation Bray on November 30 and they will be opposing the motion ‘China is good for Africa’. We wish them all the best in their next debate.

WRITER IN-RESIDENCE

Writer, poet and rapper, Colm Keegan, came to Coláiste Chill Mhantáin’s library to give a workshop in creative writing to 10 second year JCSP students. Each student was asked to talk about aspects of their own lives and Colm used this information to help them tap into their creative side. All of the students who participated said that they had never talked about themselves in such a way and really seemed to enjoy putting their lives into poems and stories. These workshops will continue every Wednesday for the next few weeks.

The students did very well navigating around the forest and most groups found all the marker points. They have spent time during their PE class learning navigation and map reading skills. They were able to put all these skills into practice while doing the course.

Mark Britchfield and Wiktor Laskowski, finished the course on Monday in the fastest time of 47minutes, winning the competition by only one minute. Joshua Rawl and Adam Maher were the worthy winners of Wednesdays competition. Well done to all the students who took part.

UNDER-17 SOCCER

The Under-17 Soccer team had a great win last Thursday coming from three to one down to win 5-3 against Arklow CBS After a slow start from CCM, they went behind from a deflected finish into the bottom right corner inside 10 minutes. CCM responded well and were rewarded with an equalizer through Jensen O’Connor Cox midway through the first half.

While CCM were playing well, they conceded two well taken goals that Seán Coffey could do nothing about. In the second half Ryan Corrigan and Jamie Noble controlled the defence and the midfield were able to push on. Daniel Fitzsimons scored a well taken goal to make it 3-2 and Jensen O’Connor Cox made it 3-3 shortly after.

CCM were excellent in the second half and Matthew Ryan was excellent on the left wing twice hitting the post. CCM were rewarded for their pressure and Daniel Fitzsimons pressed the Arklow goalkeeper forcing an error that led to a fourth for CCM With the game coming to a close, Craig Anderson assisted Daniel Fitzsimons for his hat trick with an excellent finish. The second half performance was excellent today with Seán Leonard and Jack Fox upping their game. Thanks to Cian Kelly, Luke Kelly and Joel Graham for their help throughout the game.

UNDER-15 SOCCER

Coláiste Chraobh Abhann were the opponents last Wednesday in Round two of the Leinster under-15 Minor Cup. Rathnew FC was the venue and the conditions were ideal for both teams to show off their talent. The first 10 minutes were cautious with both defences on top. CCM nearly got the opener with a fine effort by Noah Sheridan just skimming the cross bar. CCA were then awarded a corner. For once the CCM defence were caught unaware and a low strike saw the ball in our net. The CCM lads kept their heads up and attacked with ferocity. Eventually Toby Lee Curran levelled the game with a fine shot into the corner. Half time approached with both teams level at 1-1.

Ross Quinn was brought on for Max Kearney at half-time and he made an immediate impact with a low strike after a fine run. CCM were awarded a free on the hour mark on the edge of the box. Eoin Doyle stepped up and blasted the ball into the top right hand corner. With five minutes left on the clock, Toby Lee Curran went on a solo run and finished into the left corner for his second and CCMs fourth. Well done to the CCM lads on a spirited performance. The result was a little flattering as CCA put in a determined effort themselves. Thanks as always to Owen Gregory, fifth Year, for his continued support and advice and to Jensen O’Connor Cox, fifth Year.

The girls went all out in the second half but missed several goal chances. Grace Cleary, Eva Franey and Weronika Kuzio did well in the middle of the field as did Wiktoria Dolgaruki, Laura Newsome and Sophie Porter in the half forward line.
