GAA CLUB MASS

The annual Mass for deceased members of the Kilmacanogue GAA Club will take place on Friday, November 25, at 8 p.m. in our church. This is always a very special Mass to remember dear friends sadly no longer with us and it is hoped a large crowd will attend the Mass in St Moconog’s Church.

SENIOR CITIZENS

Our Local Cub Group had plenty of questions for our Kilmacanogue senior citizens when they teamed up last week and both generations really enjoyed the morning. Following on from a cup of tea, the cubs entertained the group with lots of songs and music and then, the cubs helped them make a little Christmas craft which they took home. A really lovely morning was had by all.

The Kilmacanogue Senior Citzens Committee will host their annual Christmas Fair in the Parish Hall on Sunday, December 3, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Home baking and unwanted new gifts can be given to any committee member before the fair which would be greatly appreciated.

Later that day, the annual Senior Citzens Christmas party will be held in the Summerhill Hotel in Enniskerry from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on December 3.

FAIRY HOUSE PATHWAY

Many of our readers have contacted me over the past year to find out about the famous ‘Fairy’s House’ on Carrigoona Hill. Parents and grandparents have seeked the little house to relive their own childhood memories but sadly, the pathway up to it has become totally overgrown and it cannot be found.

Well we have had a chat with a few people in a position to help and as always, they have been quick to respond and help out. That great community person Paul Cahill of Paul Cahill Hedge Cutting Services has kindly offered to clear a pathway from the Two Rocks to the house and hopefully weather permitting, you will all be able to make a visit up over the Christmas Holidays.

HISTORY SOCIETY

The final lecture for the 2017 Kilmacanogue History Society will take place on Tuesday, December 5, in the Glenview Hotel at 8 p.m. Titled ‘The Bridges of Wicklow’, it will be presented by Rob Goodbody and it promises to bring a fitting end to another great season of interesting lectures. Chair. Tommy O’Rourke would love to welcome everyone including new members on the night so please stick Tuesday the fifth in your diary folks.

CAHILL FIGHT

Many will recall James Cahill attending our National School and playing both Soccer and Gaelic Football for our juvenile teams. Well now 19-year-old James has switched codes and is a very prominent boxer. He will have his second professional fight on December 2 in the National Stadium on the ‘Celtic Clash 4’ bill.

While we all see the glamour of the ‘Pay for View’ box office fights, the road to fame starting off is a far greater challenge and boxers must help sell tickets for their event. If you went to school and knew James, perhaps you might help him out by purchasing an adult ticket at €30, €40, €60 or ringside €100 with a child under-15 only costing €15 and you can book these by either phoning James at 083 8107064 or at Ticketmaster.ie.

CHRISTMAS MARKET

The now annual outdoor Christmas market will once again take place on December 9 in Plucks Carpark. The fair will run from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. and to book a stall, please contact Kathleen Tighe at or phone 089 4067564 for your application form. The organising team have very kindly offered the money raised from Stall Holders will go to Glencormac United Football Club this year. The club caters for almost 100 kids now ranging from the Academy to under-14s and a senior team and this gesture is very much appreciated by all at the club.

CHRISTMAS DRAW

Tickets are now on sale for the annual Glencormac United FC Christmas Draw. The club have run this 500/1 Draw for the past few years and it is the main source of income to cover the yearly cost of running the club and always receives great support from the community. Tickets are €20 and you can win a first prize of €2,000, second is €1,000, third is €500 and prizes fourth to 10th are for €100. The draw will take place in less than two weeks’ time at the social night on Saturday, December 2, in Plucks and this is always a great night so please try attend.

GAA PROMOTION PLAY-OFF

There was heartbreak in Laragh last Sunday as the Kilmacanogue GAA Senior team travelled there to face Intermediate Champions Hollywood in the Division 1B Runners-up play-off. After finishing behind Kiltegan in the league, it was a three way shoot out which came down to a winner takes all on Sunday morning but Hollywood proved that little bit stronger with a 4-05 to 1-09 score line. However, this was a great league campaign by the lads in senior football ranks and they can be very proud of their efforts all season.

SOCCER ACTION

The under-14s faced Greystones United at home in the first leg of their cup semi-final last Sunday morning. The Glens controlled the first half and should have had a bigger lead at the break than 1-0, the goal coming from a cracking Luke Kelly freekick. However, Greystones came out fighting in the second period and snatched two quickfire goals and despite the glens brave efforts, they were not able to get an equaliser. However, the second leg is to come this weekend and the team are well capable of turning this tie around.

The seniors travelled to the Phoenix Park on Sunday to face Frankfort FC and came away with a 5-1 victory. Nathan Watters is on fire at the moment and scored his second hattrick in a week with Sam Kerr and Ian Devlin also hitting the net. Ian was only back from Liverpool that morning but put in a great shift in midfield along with Nathan and Alan Hill.

NEWTOWN JUNIORS FC

All our teams were in action last weekend with a mixed bag of results. Our under-8s hosted Rathnew and a game full of goals and loads of action proceeded to take place. Best for Newtown on the day were Kayla Hamilton, Aaron Nolan and David McCormack.

There was a right old tussle between our under-9s and Wicklow Rovers Green and at the end of the game there was just a couple of goals between the two teams. JV Kelly, Nathan McMahon, Alex Ryan and L8on Byrne were among the players who hit the net. Everyone connected with the under-9s and the club send their best wishes to for a speedy recovery to Oisin Duffy, who suffered a hand injury during the week.

Our under-10s had a great game at home to Wicklow Rovers Green on Sunday and though we came out on the wrong end of the result we played some very good football. Pat Carey scored for Newtown while among those who starred were Sebastian Anton, Aidan Heffernan, Darren Fisher and Daniel Eager.

Our 11’s reversed that scoreline in their game at home to Rovers Green where Jake Robertson and Matthew Doyle scored two goals each though each scored a goal thanks to a big deflection. Among the players who starred were Cillian Coffey, Rose Kelly Tynan, Evan Fahey and Brooklyn Doyle.

Our 12’s played really well in the first half away to Rathnew where they led 1-0 thanks to a goal from Grace Murphy in the Cup. Aaron Hackett made a great save from a penalty in that half as well. Unfortunatly a couple of individual mistakes early in the second half resulted in goals for the home team and a few heads went down and Rathnew ran out 5-1 winners. On the day best for the 12’s were Grace Murphy, Patrick Martin and Aaron Hackett.

Our 14’s were in cup action away to Roundwood and in this first leg they let a two goal lead slip in the last 10 minutes to share the spoils in a 2-all draw. Our goals came from Shane Dunleavy and a Luke Breen effort with the aid of a huge deflection. Marcel Kocajda was probably Newtown’s best player on the day.

The following are the fixtures for the weekending Sat/Sunday, November 25/26: under-8s away to Wicklow Rovers Green ko to be confirmed; under-9s away to Wicklow Rovers White ko to be confirmed; under-10s at home to St Patrick’s ko Sunday at 11.30 a.m.; under-11s at home to Arklow United Stripes ko to be confirmed; under-12s away to Rathnew FC ko to be confirmed (12/13 Challenge Cup); under-14s Fixture to be confirmed (fixtures and KO Times are subject to change)

Our Last Man Standing competition heads into week four with all 62 Players remarkably still standing after week three. Fixtures for week four will be the games on the weekend of November 24 to November 26. Its €450 for the winner of the competition and you can keep up to date with the LMS on our Facebook and Twitter pages. Many thanks to everyone who supported this fundraiser, it is very much appreciated.

The WDSL in conjunction with all the clubs in the league had hoped to run a fundraiser ‘The Kube’ on Saturday, November 18, in the Parkview Hotel in Newtown, but unfortunately due to circumstances beyond our control the event has had to be postponed till a latter date. The new date is April 8, 2018, and while it is disappointing that the event has been cancelled the new date offers the club the opportunity to raise more funds. The entry fee is €300 per participant, which each club must pay themselves or can, get sponsored. Sponsored cards are available at present through any committee member. Anything over €300 raised on the sponsor cards goes to the club and our participant/s stands to win up to €1,500 for the club depending on how our reps do. We had intended to have one player but we can officially announce that two coaches from the club Stephen Nolan and John Dunleavy will be representing the club on the night (no pressure lads). The lads have been very active in collecting sponsorship in the past month so please support the lads as they raise some much-needed funds for the club.

We have two players from the club celebrating a birthday in the coming week and they are Tyler Doyle from the under-8s and Martin Kelly from the under-14s. Happy birthday lads from everyone at Newtown Juniors FC.

On a sadder note the club would like to extend their deepest sympathies to the family and friends of Andrew Waters (St Joseph’s Road), Louis Ellis (Killadreenan) and Kathleen Crean (née Merriman) of Newcastle/ Ashford, who all sadly passed away recently. May they all rest in peace.
