- By DEBORAH COLEMAN

THE sod was turned on a brand new 36-unit housing development in Rathdrum on Monday, four of which are designated social properties to be allocated to Wicklow County Council tenants.

The estate named as Woodpark which is situated on the Glendalough Road is being developed by Redmond Construction and the first occupants are expected to be moved in by April 2018.

Rathdrum-based Councillor Pat Kennedy had the honour of turning the sod and said that he was delighted to see the development commence.

‘This shows great confidence in Rathdrum and it is very encouraging to see that investors are willing to come into the town and invest in property. Close to 10 of these homes are already sold and the first residents expect to be in by the end of March or early April,’ he said. Cllr Kennedy said that he was very happy to see that a portion of the properties have been designed as social houses and said that these are in addition to 20 council houses currently underway at Brewery Bends, Rathdrum.

‘Between private and council houses, there are 81 new homes under construction in Rathdrum and I think that this is indicative of a promising future for the town,’ he said.

Prices at Woodpark start at €245,000 for a three-bed semi detached house, €272,000 for four-bed semi detached, €300,000 for three-bed bungalow and €315,000 for four bed detached.

The joint selling agents are Sherry Fitzgerald Myles Doyle, Arklow and O’Neill & Flanagan, Aughrim. OUR Lady’s Girls National School in Rathdrum will host its annual Christmas Craft Fair and Coffee Morning on Thursday, December 7, starting 9 a.m. in the local RDA Hall.

There will be decorations, trinkets, jewellery and home baked goodies for sale. Visitors will also be able to purchase crafts, logs, wreaths and other items.
