SEVEN LOCAL AUTHORITY ESTATES RECEIVE GRANTS FUNDING

- By MYLES BUCHANAN

THE €4,000 remaining for Estate Development Grants in this year’s budget will be mainly spent by Wicklow Municipal District on signage.

Initially the plan was to allocate €8,000 to various local authority estates in the district but Cllr John Snell felt the process should be re-evaluated because the same estates who successfully applied for funding in 2016 were also due to receive funding this year.

‘We have a large number of local authority estates in this District and the majority aren’t applying for funding. We gave €8,000 out last April and some of the same groups are now due to get second allocations. That’s why I proposed holding back 50 per cent of the funding.

‘The onus and obligation is on us to assess these housing estates and make sure they have children at play signs, dog bins, whatever they require. I am conscious that there are housing estates that aren’t getting anything form that fund. That’s why I proposed to hold back €4,000. We need to be spreading the fund more evenly,’ sad Cllr Snell.

The remaining €4,000 will be spent on signage requests from the various estates, including children at play and dog fouling warning signs which can be placed on recently erected speed limit poles.

Prior to Monday’s monthly meeting €1,000 each was presented to Vartry Heights, Ashford; Ballinalea, Ashford and Carrig Court, Rathnew.

Mountain View, Newtown, Gleann Chill, Glenealy; Sycamore Drive, Newtown and BBH, Wicklow town, all received €250 each.
