Grand Slam Bridge Club

Last Wednesday proved a very wet evening with floods all over the country and this put a stop to many bridge players venturing out for the fun and games in the Dominican Ecology Centre.

There was a smaller turnout than of late but those that braved the elements had a very enjoyable evening.

Two pairs bid and made small slams on the night. Many hands failed to make the number of tricks contracted.

Some red faces when the dreaded ‘DOUBLE’ was used by the opponents only to see the contracts being brought home by the declarer.

There was a tie for first place by two experienced pairs. Ann McCarthy and Billy Dunne and Linda Walsh and Carol Wadden shared the honours.

In third spot was a novice and her partner. Margaret Purcell and Kay Kelly and not too far off the pace were Angela McDermot and Pam McDonogh.

The tutorial session for an hour before the main competition introduced beginners to a few of the less frequently dealt strong hands that open at the higher level. The terrible twos! Two No Trump, Two Clubs and Two of the other three suits; diamonds, hearts or spades, and the partner’s responses.

All very nerve racking stuff for the novice. These type of hands should make a player sit up and do the maths. All great fun and part of the challenge that every hand dealt present the players.

Any new players are welcome to join the group at 6.30 p.m. for an hour free of charge on any Wednesday evening in the Dominican Ecology campus in Wicklow Town for a relaxed introduction to this great card game.

More next week.
