KAS PROGRAMME

Carlow and South Leinster Rape Crisis Centre are attending Coláiste Eoin and completing the KAS (Knowledge, Awareness and safety) Programme with TY students. This programme is an education programme operating in secondary schools. This programme is the centre’s second largest service, after client counselling. The primary aim of the programme is to raise students’ awareness of rape, sexual violence and sexual harassment using interactive workshops and personal development exercises.

The KAS Programme is designed to give young people knowledge allowing them to understand and determine their own personal beliefs, attitudes and responsibilities in society. The programme is delivered to transition year students in two-hour sessions by specially trained and experienced facilitators.

During the academic year 2013/14 the KAS Programme was delivered to approximately 2,000 students in 30 schools in Counties Carlow, Kilkenny, Kildare, Laois, Wicklow and Wexford. Schools in the Carlow and South Leinster area continued to be targeted the programme is a wonderful awareness campaign.

ASH ANIMAL RESCUE

Helena from ASH Animal Rescue came to Coláiste Eoin and reiterated that a dog is not just for Christmas but for life. ASH is a non-profit organisation and is based in Rathdangan, Co.Wicklow. Since 1990 they have taken in hundreds of unwanted dogs and cats and a variety of other animals. Helena and her colleagues spend their lives doing caring for animals, rehabilitating some and looking for loving homes for those that can be homed.

There is a strict ‘no kill’ policy at ASH Any animals that can’t be rehomed for whatever reason will become permanent members of the ASH family. The students were delighted Helena and friends and thanked her for raising awareness about this issue. and the need for Ireland to have a far more modern approach. Liadh Cronin argued that school uniforms are unhygienic and lead to inactivity and unhealthy lifestyles. Ciara wished to convince the audience that the wearing of school uniforms destroys individuality and creativity. Tracy Wright discussed the high costs of school uniforms for families and also argued that school uniforms create divisions and prejudice based on religion and wealth.

These arguments were all made ‘auf Deutsch’. The standard of the debate was very high on both sides. The Ursuline Convent girls were deemed the winners on the day. However, it must be said that the DCW German debating team also performed to an excellent standard. Sehr gut gemacht.

Well done to all those who participated in the cross country in Avondale on Tuesday, November 28. YOUTH LEADERSHIP

Competition held recently in the Grand Hotel.

GIRLS SOCCER

Hard luck to our under-15 girls soccer team who succumbed to a heavy defeat against a very strong and experienced Gorey CS team. The one big lesson to be learned from the game is that in any team sport, you have to try to be competitive. To their credit, the girls were very competitive in the second half of this game, restricting their opponents to a single goal. Unfortunately, the damage had been done in the first half. The girls should look forward to their next match as they are very unlikely to face such strong opposition again in the competition.

CROSS COUNTRY

Well done to all cross country runners who competed in Avondale on Tuesday, November 28. Another successful outing for EGS. First year girls won bronze team medals, third year girls won gold team medals and third year boys won bronze. Also many individual medals were won.
