CSPE DÁIL TRIP

Two groups of 3rd Years, 3 Avoca and 3 Barrow, visited the Dàil and the Seanad as part of their Action Project last Friday week. They were able to see how the government works and the history behind the government buildings. Along with this, they visited Trinity College and had a chance to walk around the college and explore the wonderful Georgian architecture of the buildings.

Last Wednesday 8 Transition Year students travelled to Coláiste Chraobh Abhann, Kilcoole to compete in the 3rd annual Wicklow Schools Business Quiz. The first team comprised of Lauren Smyth, Shelley Culbert, Cíona Corcoran, and Amy Doyle. Our second team included Cian Doyle, Mark Britchfield, Rhys Dignam Snell and Wiktor Laskowski. The two teams competed against 7 other schools in Wicklow. No trophy received on the day but both teams performed very well, achieving over 65% correct answers. Well done to those TY students.

LCVP VISIT

Last week 6 Slaney LCVP class visited Killowen farm outside Enniscorthy to see yogurt production and packaging in order to write up their summary report for their LCVP Porfolio. Killowen is the only farm in Ireland that has fully traceable yogurt as all the milk they use in the manufacture of their yogurt is produced on the farm and most of the fruit they include is locally grown. This is their main unique selling point as well as their high standard of quality.

The class was able to see the filing and labeling of the yogurt pots and they were quite surprised at how labour intensive the whole process is. They also produce yogurt for the supermarkets and these are labelled as own brand products for the supermarket. They have been awarded the Blas Na hEireann and the Great Taste producer awards. They export their yogurt to Dubai, Singapore, Malaysia an Hong Kong. The students got lots of information to write up a very detailed Summary Report.

AGRICUTURAL SCIENCE TRIP

Last week all Agricultural Science students participated in a farm visit as part of the senior Agricultural Science programme. The visit was highly relevant to the students’ studies and proved to be a valuable learning experience.

‘IT IS NOT JUST FOR GEEKS’

Eamonn and Kate from Dell presented their programme ‘IT is not just for Geeks’ to all TY students last Thursday, 30th November, in the Demonstration Room. Their presentation was relevant and engaging and students enjoyed it greatly.

Last week students investigated which solution produces the best crystals. The finished products will be used to decorate our ‘Chemistree’ ?

SENIOR FOOTBALL

CCM 10-10 Gaelcholáiste Na Mara 4-04

With a strong breeze against us in the first half playing into the Burkeen end we managed to score 10-1. The whole team worked the ball well through the phases to get into good scoring positions. The second half brought much the same but with the wind at our back we went for points.

Both teams had decided at half time that we would only play 15-20 minutes of the second half. The match, which took place last Tuesday, was a good boost for the lads who again showed a great spirit and encouraged each other throughout the game. Mathew Ryan, John Moorehouse, Luke Corcoran and Jack Healy played very well. Next up is Pres Bray on Dec 8th in the first round of Wicklow B.

UNDER-19 SOCCER

CCM soccer endured what would have been deemed a hammering, but anyone who did not witness this game, was in for a surprise. It seemed as though the home team was not allowed to score. We saw the crossbar take a hit from a great piece of play from Jack Healy. Matthew Ryan was exceptional on the left wind, whisking the ball just past the post. Other chances were unlucky not to see the end target.

The team played exceptionally well as a unit but, unfortunately, goals win games, added with the extra cost of missing some strong players. It leaves us a battle with Woodbrook to go through to the next stage.

FIRST YEAR GAELIC

First Year Gaelic footballers played Coláiste Craobh Abhann last Friday week where they had a great win with a score line of 1015 to 1- 4. Coláiste Chill Mhantáin dominated from start to finish with great displays from Joe Neilan, Conor Luddy and Toby Lee Curran. All players contributed immensely and all subs played their part too.

JUNIOR FOOTBALL

Our boys had a very good win over CCA Kilcoole last Friday week in Rathnew GAA. We started well but found ourselves a goal down in the opening minutes after some fine play from CCA. It was early days so our guys didn’t panic and started to tag on the points to the scoreboard before we struck with a convincing move and claimed our first goal. We were doing a lot of the ball playing but not putting CCA to the sword. Half time score line was 2-4 to 2-2 to Kilcoole.

Finally the lads realised it was time to start putting some scores on the board and killed the game in the next 15 minutes with some fine scores taken by Dylan Kavanagh, Dylan Smyth and our talisman Eoin Doyle.

We had the opportunity to send in all our reinforcements with 15 minutes remaining and still held out for a comfortable win, although CCA grabbed a consolation goal with the last kick of the game. Man of the Match was Jamie Noble with a sterling performance playing full back, repelling a lot of the Kilcoole attacks which led us to victory on a scoreline of 6-9 to 4-6. We now await some results to see do we advance. talks on entrepreneurship from local businesses in the area and Dr Therese Moylan from IADT spoke with the Second Year students regarding design challenges for their products.

There was also a CCAs weakest link competition and a Wicklow Inter-schools’ Business Quiz which was won by a team from St David’s. Well done to all the students who took part and a big thank you to the Business Department for organising an amazing week.

The Junior Girls’ Football team travelled to Dunlavin on Thursday, November 30, where they had a very convincing win against Dunlavin in the league. There were outstanding performances from the whole team. There was absolutely no stopping Lara Harrison and Kerryann Hamilton, who played excellently in the forwards, while Eve Lacey and Úna Power controlled midfield throughout the match. The backs were exceptional with Katelyn O’Toole and Ciara McLeavey displaying brilliant performances. It was a great team effort and hopefully the girls will keep this up for their next match.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Another impressive victory for the under-16 CCA Boys’ basketball team who beat St David’s 44-23 last week in the Wicklow League. Dylan Radzuis and Markas Isajevas were two players who drove both teams to victory on the day, while Cian Cathal and Cian Doyle were mentioned by Mr Craven as showing huge improvement. It was a much closer affair with the under-19s match, as St David’s pushed CCA all the way, however CCA managed to pull away in the final quarter to win the game by 47-38.

BOYS’ SOCCER

The under-19 boys’ soccer team beat Woodbrook College, Bray by one goal to nil on Friday, November 24, in Greystones. Ronan O’Kelly scored the only

The First Year CCA team took on Avondale in the Wicklow League on Thursday, November 30, in the Kilcoole GGA grounds. The conditions on the day were perfect and the game lived up to expectation, with some fine performances from Craig Davis and Luke Breen. Mr Mullen said that CCA team were on top for most of the match, but an exceptional performance by Avondale’s number eight in midfield saw the two sides ending honours even at the final whistle. The result ended 3-7 all.

The CCA under-16s Football team took on a strong Avondale side in the Wicklow League last week in a competitive match, which saw CCA going in at half time ahead. However, the second half saw Avondale increase the intensity of their play, and despite some valiant defending by CCA, Avondale ended the match as comfortable winners. Mr Halpin noted Oisín Cullen as the player of the team for CCA.

CROSS COUNTRY

Twelve CCA students from across every year group competed in the Wicklow Schools’ Invitational Cross Country in Avondale Forest Park, Rathdrum on Tuesday, November 28. Despite the cold and muddy conditions, CCA brought home 10 medals in total, with outstanding runs from Eve Leacy in second year and Stevie Stokes in third year. This is the final competition of the season, with the East Leinster Championships starting up in January.
