Loyal CE workers retire in Tinahely

-

CHRISTMAS cheer and goodwill was in abundance in Tinahely recently as retirement presentations to a number of community stalwarts were made.

The occasion was especially poignant as a dear colleague, Tom Doran, who was due to retire at this event, passed away tragically earlier in the year. Tom’s widow Eileen attended in his place and presented a cheque for €2,000 to Terry Platt of Pieta House, the proceeds of a charity walk held in Tom’s memory.

Eileen thanked the community for the great support she has received.

Tom was a much loved character in the village and known as ‘Mr Tinahely Tidy Towns’ as he dedicated himself to the upkeep, maintenance and cleanliness of Tinahely. His care and attention to the flowerbeds and other planted areas drew praise from many quarters, not least from the National Tidy Towns judges, who commented favourably on his work.

Although rostered to work 19.5 hours per week, Tom frequently put in much longer hours.

His gentle manner and work ethic are sadly missed.

Retiring from the Tinahely Community Employment scheme with over five years of service were Mattie Moran and Willie Rooney.

During that time, they have worked on the Tinahely walks, community recycling centre, the Tinahely Agricultural Show, Killavaney Parish Church and graveyard as well as many projects for Tinahely Tidy Towns.

This dynamic duo have proved themselves invaluable and it will be a challenge to replace them.

Elizabeth Donohue gave over two years’ service with Tinahely Community Employment.

She was administrator for Tinahely Community Recycling Centre, a role to which she applied herself with wholehearted diligence and professionalism. She helped to develop the administrative structure that allowed for the smooth running of this vital facility.

Chairman of Tinahely Community Employment Jim Coogan thanked Mattie, Willie and Liz for all their work over the years and wished them well in their retirement.

Chairman of Tinahely Community Projects Rory MacDermott spoke about how important the participants are to the whole village, quietly ensuring the good appearance and smooth running of the town and its environs.

Event organiser Dave Murray, the CE supervisor, thanked the participants for their contribution on behalf of the community and everyone wished them well in the next stage of their lives.

Also in attendance was Mary Lennon, representing the Department of Social Protection, who complimented the scheme on its success and commented on the importance of being valued and appreciated within the community.
