Kilmac GAA seeking help to finish work

CLUBHOUSE DESTROYED BY FIRE 2 YEARS AGO

- By MARY FOGARTY

KILMACANOGUE clubhouse is nearly over the line, but the local GAA club still needs help to finish the project.

The clubhouse is being rebuilt after being destroyed in a malicious fire two years ago.

‘We’ve taken ownership of it from the builder,’ said club chairman Marc Quinn. The building is fully watertight now, plastered, with the roof on, doors in, and some painting done.

The remaining work will include an internal fit-out, plumbing, electrics and installing benches and showers in the dressing rooms. Mark said that the hope is to get at least the two dressing rooms and outside toilets usable by the end of January so that the players at least have somewhere to get changed and have a shower.

‘We’re nearly heading for just over two years without any facilities at all,’ he said, adding that the new centre would be for the entire community as well as the GAA. ‘It’s going to benefit ten generations,’ he said.

They are seeking donations of either money or materials or even voluntary labour to get the build fully finished.

‘If everything comes together we hope by the middle of the year it will be fully complete,’ said Mark.

The build got under way on April 1 of this year.

A plaque will be installed to the memory of the late John Donnelly, who had a major input into the project from the start. ‘It’s a shame he won’t get to see it finished after all his hard work and dedication to the club,’ said Mark.

Kilmacanogue man John died suddenly last October.

Mark said that Andrew Molloy and John Flynn had put in hard and dedicated work during the building stage, and a development committee have overseen the project.
