TWO SURVEYS ON MURROUGH EROSION TO BE UNDERTAKEN, SAYS MINISTER
THE MINISTER of State for the Office of Public Works and Flood Relief has ordered two surveys to be carried out on erosion taking place at the Murrough.
Minister Kevin ‘Boxer’ Moran visited the Murrough yesterday (Tuesday) and witnessed for himself the extent of coastal erosion which is occurring along the popular walk.
In 2016, Iarnród Eireann carried out emergency works on New Years Day to protect the railway line from being impacted by severe erosion in the wake of Storm Frank.
Wicklow County Council also put in place protective measures. However, recent stormy weather has resulted in further chunks of the walk being washed away.
Fianna Fáil Deputy Pat Casey was part of the delegation accompanying Minister Moran during Tuesday’s visit.
‘I was delighted he agreed to visit and see at first hand the damage that has occurred and the potential that adequate defences could bring to the Murrough. The damage to the coastline has been immense, with the potential for disastrous consequences if not addressed.’
The Minister has called for two surveys to be carried out before he decides what level of funding, if available, is required.
‘Based on the surveys he will decide whether to provide finance for a short-term solution or whether larger funding for a long-term solution is more financially viable. He wants the surveys carried out as soon as possible. I am hopeful that Minister Moran will now be able to seek the support that he needs from his colleagues in Government.’
