SACRISTY IS RANSACKED

BREAK-IN AT ST JOSEPH’S CHURCH IN GLENEALY OVER THE WEEKEND

- By MYLES BUCHANAN

A DOOR to St Joseph’s Church in Glenealy was kicked in and a sum of money was stolen after the sacristy was completely ransacked last Friday night. Items were strewn across the room as the person or persons responsible searched for contents to steal.

Fr Eamon Crossan thanked the gardaí for their prompt reaction to the incident, and praised the community for rallying in support of the church.

He said he was thankful that the church’s tabernacle was not targeted.

ST Joseph’s Church in Glenealy was broken into and its sacristy ransacked in what appears to have been a desperate search for money.

On Saturday morning, a member of the parish found that the door to the sacristy had been kicked open and the room was in complete disarray, with items tossed about and left lying on the floor and scattered elsewhere. Only a small sum of cash appears to have been stolen.

Fr Eamon Crossan is thankful that the culprit or culprits didn’t target the Tabernacle.

‘The person who first came across the break-in got quite the shock. The door had been kicked in and someone went carefully through the room looking for something to steal. Only a small enough sum of cash was missing. Thankfully, whoever was responsible didn’t touch the Tabernacle. I must thank the gardai. They were very prompt and arrived here almost immediately after they were first contacted. We will have to replace the sacristy door but there wasn’t any real further damage caused. There were a few other break-ins in the locality during the week.’

Two burglaries in Black Hill, Glenealy, took place during the week as well, while a shotgun was stolen from a house in Glenealy the previous week.

Fr Crossan has also offered his thanks to the local community for their kindwords since learning of the break-in at St Joseph’s.

‘We have had a great reaction from everyone. Glenealy is a real tight-knit community and residents have vowed to keep an eye on the church, just like they always have done.’

Anyone who may be able to assist the Gardai should contact Wicklow Garda Station.
