TY CHRISTMAS TRIP

A total of 92 Transition Years travelled to Dundrum for their annual Christmas trip. First they went to the cinema and watched a special showing of Daddy’s Home two. This was followed with an hour of ice skating where a great time was had by all. The students were a credit to themselves and are to be praised for their behaviour.

TALENT SHOW

This year’s Talent Show, which took place on the day of the holidays, was a really outstanding show, providing us with an insight to student talents that, perhaps, we were not fully aware of. This show is always a lovely way to end the year and to showcase the students’ extraordinary talent.

Very well done to the winners of the Talent Show, who are as follows. Runner-up: Amy Ronan and Lillie Reid. Third Place: Rían Byrne. Second Place: Kiernan Irons. First Place: Snackbox (Pádraig Cahill, Katie McAulay, Aoife Collier, David Mulvey and James Byrne)

MOSQUE VISIT

As part of their Religious Education Coursework Journal, students from three Slaney and three Avoca visited the Islamic Culture Centre of Ireland in Clonskeagh, Dublin on Wednesday last.

Students spent the visit learning about Islamic culture, tradition and prayer as well as the Irish Muslim community. They were given a tour of the Mosque and spent some time in the Prayer Hall. They were lucky enough to receive a gift of a school bag and also found out some interesting facts about Islam and the Islamic Culture Centre, in particular that there are 85,000 Muslims living in Ireland today and the colours of the carpet in the Prayer Hall represent the Irish flag.

Students came away from the visit with a wealth of knowledge that will assist them with their studies. An interesting and informative experience was had by all.

YOUNG SCIENTIST

Over 120 first year students attended the BT Young Scientist Exhibition last Thursday, January 11. There were 550 projects on show at this year’s Exhibition across four categories: Technology; Biological and Ecological; Social and Behavioural Sciences; and Chemical, Physical and Mathematical Sciences.

This year’s projects cover a wide variety of topics, from homelessness to the HPV vaccine and everything in between. Students were very impressed by the projects and enjoyed visiting the interactive area. We hope that this trip will provide inspiration for projects of their own in the future with some students already planning ideas. Thanks to the teachers and SNAs for accompanying them.
