HAPPY NEW YEAR
Welcome back to all and a very happy new year to you all.
YOUNG SCIENTIST
Congratulations to the students representing DCW in this year’s ‘Young Scientist Exhibition’. The girls involved were Lilly Devitt and Isabelle Downey, Catherine Moyseyeva and Rachel Werner and Maria Ahmed and Alana Mays. They worked very hard on their projects right through the term to their Christmas holidays.
The projects that they worked on were: ‘Experimental and theoretical investigation of air resistance on falling coffee filters and ping pong balls’ (Lilly and Isabella), ‘The physics of the trebuchet catapult’ (Catherine and Rachel) and ‘An investigation into the physics of a whirligig with the aim of producing a simple blood centrifuge that can be used in developing countries’ (Maria and Alana).
On Wednesday, January 10, President Michael D Higgins formally opened the exhibition. The girls were delighted to meet with him and his wife. The girls got to talk to him about their projects. President Higgins was very impressed with their very interesting and informative overviews of their work. Well done girls on getting accepted to the Exhibition with your projects and we wish you lots of luck and fun with the week. A huge thank you goes to Mr O’Brien for all his hard work and dedication working with all the students throughout the term.
CSPE TRIP TO THE DÁIL
On Tuesday, January 9, two Sapphire took a trip to Dáil Éireann as part of their CSPE action project to enhance their understanding of how democracy works in Ireland. The girls had a lovely tour of the Dáil where they got to see hand on what most would only see on TV the trip was organised through local TD Andrew Doyle. The girls had a very educational and fun day and squeezed in a couple of visits to the museums while in Dublin. Thanks to Ms Scahaill for organising this trip.
PARENT/TEACHER MEETINGS
On Tuesday, January 16, the first year parent teacher meeting will take place, and on Wednesday, January 24, the second year parent teacher meeting will be held. We would encourage you all to attend and make the most of this opportunity to meet with your child’s teachers to discuss their progress. We look forward to meeting you.
CAREER TALK
The Career’s Advisor, Elena Somoza, from IADT (Institute of art, Design and Technology) visited on Friday to give a very informative presentation to a large group of sixth years, followed by a combined group of fifth, fourth and third years.
Although most degrees in IADT need a portfolio, there are degrees in Entrepreneurship, English, Culture and Media Studies and Applied Psychology. A significant number of DCW students attend or have attended IADT in the past. Thanks to Ms Mason for organising.
CROSS COUNTRY
Training has resumed for the DCW athletes as they prepare for the next cross country event which will be held in Avondale on January 25 Let’s hope 2018 will be as successful a year as the last year was best of luck girls.
MOCK EXAMS
Mock examinations will begin for all sixth year and third year students on Tuesday and Wednesday, January 30, and 31. Timetables are available for these exams. These exams provide a great opportunity for the students to experience a trial run at the Leaving Certificate. We wish all students the best of luck in their preparation and exams.
2ND YEAR IRISH
The second year higher level Irish students are enjoying writing to their ‘pen pals’ in Coláiste Mhuire in Trim, Co. Meath. This is a great fun way for the students to practice and improve their Irish writing skills.
HOCKEY
On Friday, December 15, the first year hockey teams played home matches against Holy Faith, Clontarf. Two teams played. One match was a very close game which ended in a 1-1 draw; and the other played extremely well with an easy victory with a very high score line. Well done to all the first year hockey girls.
On Tuesday, December 19, DCW played host to local rivals EGS. It was a keenly contested game. Unfortunately DCW had lots of scoring opportunities but failed to capitalise on their attacking play. The game ended in a 0-0 draw. Training has resumed for this term and best of luck to all this year.
PARENTS’ ASSOCIATION
The parents’ association will be meeting next on Monday, January 29. The parents’ association play a very valuable role in the school community and we are very grateful to these parents for all the positive ways in which they contribute to our school.
