RATHNEW’S GOLDEN GIRL

- By MYLES BUCHANAN

ABBIE DOYLE was afforded a hero’s welcome as she returned to Rathnew victorious from the Golden Girl Championships held in Sweden.

Representing Enniskerry Boxing Club in Boras, Sweden, Abbie was in the red corner and defeated her opponent 5-0, including a standing count in round 3 when she knocked her adversary to the canvass.

The Golden Girl Championships is the biggest all-female and independent amateur boxing tournament in the world.

2018 marked the highest numbers of boxers taking part yet, with over 250 amateurs putting on their gloves

Abbie flew home on Monday afternoon and was greeted at Dublin Airport by her mother, brother, granny and her three sisters.

However, that was nothing compared to the greeting that awaited her back in her home village. A large crowd gathered outside Doyle’s to congratulate the Golden Girl.

Her sister Bernice Watters said Abbie’s whole family are bursting with pride at her achievements.

‘We are just over the moon. I don’t think there are words to describe just how proud we are of her. She loves the boxing and is so dedicate to the sport.

‘She has put in so much hard work and its great to see her getting such rewards. Her coach Paul O’Toole has been brilliant. He was in her corner over in Sweden, along with Eve Carr, and we would like to thank the pair of them for their efforts.’

After returning home, Abbie treated herself to some much-needed rest but soon she will be back training in the gym again in preparation for the upcoming Michael Andrew tournament and the Leinster Tournament.
