Wicklow Montessori pupils scoop ANOTHER Lego win! Intoxicated man lying on ground

- By MYLES BUCHANAN

WICKLOW Montessori defended their SAP Ireland First Lego League robotics championship in Galway over the weekend after landing the title for the second year in a row.

In 2017 the Wicklow town school won with its ‘Robo Riders’ entry, and this year they returned with ‘Aerbots’ and doggedly won heat after heat in a day of intense but fun competition to secure the winning trophy once again.

As well as building and coding a robot to accomplish a set of tasks on a competition table, teams also had to present a wall project on the theme of hydrodynamics

The Wicklow pupils looked at what happens to all the water confiscated at airport security check-ins.

Travelling to Dublin airport to monitor behaviour and measure the problem, they came up with a range of recycling solutions from watering plants to washing aeroplanes and even, through the use of special filters, reusing it for drinking.

The winning team will now go on to represent Ireland at the UK and Ireland finals in Bristol, with the potential to progress to the EU Finals later in the year.

Last year’s win saw Wicklow Montessori’s team of sixth class pupils travel to the UK city of Bath to compete against teams from 90 countries, netting a prestigious judges’ award for their work.

The competition, now in its 12th year is growing ever more popular, with over 24 teams participating from around the country. Each team submits a research project on a specific theme and collaborates on the design and build of a robot, which must perform a series of tasks to progress through the various rounds of the competition. Teachers, parents and other mentors work with each team to foster problem-solving, lateral thinking and teamwork skills. A MAN who was drunk, and behaving in a threatening manner towards a woman, was fined a total of €450 recently.

Adam Corcoran (22), 5 Cois na Cora, Powdermills, Ballincollig, Cork, appeared recently in Bray District Court.

Gardaí responded to a report of disorderly conduct at Marlton Court, Wicklow, on May 21, 2017. When they got there, Corcoran was lying on the ground. There was a female in his company and he was behaving in a threatening manner towards her.

The court heard that he was highly intoxicated.

The court heard that Corcoran’s bad behaviour was linked to being drunk. His partner was in court with him.

Judge David Kennedy handed down a fine of €100 for being drunk, and €350 for threatening behaviour.
