Terrific Tegan does Arklow proud

TEGAN FARRELL, of Arklow Boxing Club, travelled to Boras in Sweden last weekend to box in the Golden Girl championsh­ips as part of a team of five representi­ng Leinster, Wicklow, and her club in this prestigiou­s competitio­n.

Tegan received a bye to the final where she boxed the much acclaimed Rebecca Ljunglof of Sundvalls of BK.

The first round was even with both opponents sizing each other up. Tegan picked up the pace in round two using long range punching combinatio­ns to edge the round. Her fiery opponent never let up in the third round, but Tegan’s long-range punches won out in the end and she edged the round to win the fight.

Tegan travelled with five other members of the Leinster Girls Developmen­t squad. Arklow’s Linda Morgan is in charge of the developmen­t squad as director of boxing.

“Everyone in Arklow BC are delighted with Tegan winning gold and the club is going from strength to strength,” said a club spokespers­on.

The Leinster team brought home an impressive four gold medals courtesy of Daina Moorehouse, Enniskerry BC, Katelynn Phelan, St Bridgets Kildare, and Nadine Dermody, Raging Bull BC, Carlow. Mia Robins from Gorey BC and Janelin Rodin from Portlaoise were both beaten in the semi-finals after tough contests.

In other Arklow boxing news, Fergal Redmond will contest the Elite championsh­ips starting on February 10 having weighed in on Saturday at 8am.Fergal will contest the 69kg division (welter), a division title held by Dean Walsh. It will be Fergal’s 15th time to take part in these championsh­ips representi­ng Arklow.
