Rovers in superb form

-

WICKLOW ROVERS AFC were hoping to make it three wins on the bounce and continue their good form as they faced the league leaders Trinity Donaghmeade in this intriguing Leinster Senior League Major 1 Sunday clash at Whitegates last Friday night.

They got off on the wrong foot as they went behind to the Dublin outfit after nine minutes. They equalised soon after when Lenny Carton headed home a Luke Byrne corner.

The Whitegates outfit dominated the rest of the first half without causing their opponents much trouble in front of goal.

Rovers continued in the same vain after the interval and it was no surprise when they took the lead when another beautifully delivered corner by Byrne found the left boot of Tommy Kelly who finished expertly.

The Wicklow town side excelled in the final 15 minutes of the game as they scored three quick-fire goals.

The first of these coming from Ciaran McGettigan who pounced on a loose ball after impressive work by Gareth Murphy. McGettigan got his second and the team’s fourth as he beat the opposing centre half splendidly before clinically finishing for his 12th of the season.

They wrapped up the 5-1 victory in added time as Peter Finnegan slotted home from the edge of the penalty area.

The win moves Rovers up to third in the table, just three points off the top of the table. This victory will give them a huge confidence boost ahead of their crucial Leinster Junior Cup game against Ayrfield United at Whitegates next Friday night.

In the same league, Enniskerry FC sit in eight position after 13 games with a total of 25 points acrued while Blessington are two places further down in 10th with eight played and 15 points in the bank.
