GAA NEWS

The junior girls played the semi-final of the A championship against St Kevin’s CC in Rathnew. It was a game of fluctuating fortunes between two fine teams with the lead changing hands a number of times.

Dominican started the better and had two points on the board early on. At the other end a long range free hit the crossbar and rebounded for one of St Kevin’s players to hit the back of the net. At the end of the first quarter St Kevin’s led 1-1 to 0-3 but DCW were doing the bulk of the attacking and were rewarded with a Niamh Caffery goal in the 18th minute. They went on to lead by 1-5 to 1-1, but in the last attack of the half St Kevin’s scored a goal to leave a single point between the sides when referee Eddie Leonard blew for half-time.

St Kevin’s came out the stronger in the second half with a goal within two minutes. They added points regularly and followed it up with another goal in the 14th minute to give them a lead of 4-5 to 1-6. A Niamh Caffery goal for DCW in the 19th minute gave the girls renewed hope and when Niamh hit the net again three minutes later they began to scent a possible victory. In the 26th minute DCW scored another goal, this time by Leah Murphy, to reduce the lead to a single point. DCW continued to attack and were rewarded a long distance free which was sent over the bar by Niamh Caffery for the equaliser. Both sides had chances in an exciting finale with extra time looming but it was Jennifer Madden, who secured victory for DCW with a long range goal.

Well done to all the girls on a great team performance. DCW now meet Scoil Chonglais in the Junior A final. Date and venue to be confirmed.
