ATHLETICS CLUB

Our annual AGM will be held in Aughrim Sports Complex on Thursday, February 8, at 8.30. We look forward to welcoming all our members and friends from the Aughrim and Annacurra communitie­s.

The Athletics Club runs handin-hand with Community Games, with training taking place Mon nights at seven at the Aughrim Sport Complex. Club members can participat­e in numerous cross-country and track and field events throughout the county.

Registrati­ons are now being taken (Adults €25 Children €15)

45 CARD GAME

45 card game will be on Friday night next February 9 starting at 8.30 p.m., in the Saltee.

WHIST DRIVE

There will be a whist drive in Tinahely Parochial Hall on Thursday, February 8, starting at 8-30.

TABLE QUIZ

Saturday, February 17, in the Saltee Pub. Starting time 8-30. €10 per person/4 per table. Proceeds for upkeep of Annacurra Parish Church and cemetery. Coffee morning.

A coffee morning will take place on Friday, February 16, in the Courthouse Arts Centre, Tinahely 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. All proceeds from this fundraiser will help support the great work of Sr. Ursula Henchion and the Missionary Sisters of the Assumption in Port Alfred, South Africa. All this work is done within the spirit and framework of the local society of St Vincent de Paul Conference, St James, Port Alfred.

Besides assisting individual families in need and who fall upon hard times, the programmes provide regular relief for many in the community. Your generous donations will enable them to continue with a number of their activities, including the distributi­on of food parcels, the provision of school uniforms, daily meals for the children at the Siyazama Educate Centre and assistance to families in distress. Thanks to the generosity of supporters winter blankets were distribute­d last winter – yes, it gets very cold during their relatively short winter.

With the support and encouragem­ent of their partners, overseas benefactor­s and friends from near and far, the charity is looking forward to being able to continue with these programmes during 2018. Your generosity makes a difference to people’s lives. Thank YOU GAA club news.

Our sympathy to the Byrne and Doyle families on the passing of brother and sister Liam and Mary. Also to the Caulfield family on the passing of Joe. May they rest in peace. Senior and junior training is in full flow now and the seniors are starting their league campaign on February 18. All support will be appreciate­d.

Lotto – Results for January 29. No jackpot winner. Numbers drawn were 2, 3, 6 and 19. Matchthree winner, Emma, Emma Murphy c/o David Murphy, Ballycooge. Next week’s jackpot €2,050. Draw held in Saltee on Monday nights.

Askamore Community Council would like to say a big thank you to everyone who made the Stephen Murphy concert a great success, thanks to all the performers, ticket sellers, MC jim Gilbert and Byrne Bros for the sound, the profit raised was €1,760.

COMMUNITY EMPLOYMENT

On February 11 the walk is at Lowbawn-Little Sugarloaf. Grade B, 14km, 3.5 hours. Meeting in Tinahely at 10 a.m. On Sunday, February 18, the walk is at Slievebawn-Tomduff. Grade B, 10k, three hours, meeting at Bunclody at 10 a.m. Please ensure to wear proper walking boots, to bring adequate food and drink and to pack (or wear) rain gear.

BALLYELLIS NS

Enrolment forms are now available for those wishing to enrol in September 2018. If you know of anyone wishing to have a child enrolled in Ballyellis please inform them that these forms are now available. BENEFIT NIGHT

CCE DONARD

We hope to see many many faces in Donard Hall at 9 p.m. on Friday, February 16, to join in our céilí mór for patient comfort fund of our neighbours in Baltinglas­s Hospital. Donations and items for the raffle would be gratefully accepted.

SYMPATHY

The next meeting of Donard/ Glen history group will take place in Donard Hall on Wednesday, February 14, at 8 p.m. Anyone, who is interested in getting to know more about the area or who might have old photograph­s or memorabili­a of the area is very welcome to come along and share them. We are very lucky to have in the group two amazing very senior citizens who can recall so many of the old traditions and events of their youth.

The ladies would like to congratula­te Sarah O’Neill on the launch of her book Deadly Obsession in Tinahely Library recently. ‘Deadly Obsessions’ is a gripping crime thriller and is a brilliant start to a new series. Congratula­tions to her.

The ICA Ladies have their first meeting for 2018 on February 15 in the Teagasc Centre at 7.30. All welcome back and we have a great Talk on Garden Design by the Byrne Bros. It will get us all going for the spring with our gardens.

We would like to send our sympathies to the Cleary family on the death of Pauline, who was a long time member of ICA. We will sadly miss her from our meeting. RIP and condolence­s to Joe, Róisín, Sarah, Deirdre and Robert.

There will be a free Workshop on Water Colours in the Courthouse on February 15 from 10 a.m. to midday.
