CARTOON FESTIVAL WILL RETURN Legend of Luke Kelly tribute night

-

AFTER the success of last year’s 25th anniversary Rathdrum International Cartoon Festival, it has been announced that the festival will run again this year on the June Bank Holiday Weekend.

The committee are busy putting together an exciting line-up of events and more details will be announced in the coming months.

The festival was reintroduced last year after a 25-year absence and featured such prominent figures as Tom Halliday, Tim Leatherbarrow, Guy Carter, Greame Keyes and Michael Carroll of 2000AD.

Other activities included workshops, live music and exhibitions.

The festival first took place in 1992 having been started by the late cartoonist Terry Willers and fellow cartoonist Martyn Turner. It continued for six years and, at its peak, was considered one of the best cartoon festivals in Europe. Bray man Alan Connolly is organising a charity gig with ‘The Legend of Luke Kelly’ tribute act next month.

The show will be on at the Parkview in Newtownmountkennedy on Saturday, March 24 at 7.30 p.m.

Alan is organising the event in aid of CDKL5 disorder, the condition his daughter Alex has.

It is a rare neurological development disorder resulting with severe epilepsy, scoliosis, breathing difficulties, feeding difficulties, visual impairment, limited mobility and being confined to a wheelchair. It occurs mainly girls and they require 24-hour care.

There are only six cases in Ireland and CDKL5 Ireland is raising funds for vital research into this terrible disorder.

‘It won’t directly help my daughter Alex as she is now 21 but we are hopeful it will help younger children and stop families going through what we did,’ said Alan.

‘The Legend of Luke Kelly’ is singer-songwriter Chris Kavanagh along with guests, who are expected to raise the roof at the Parkview to celebrate the memory, music and songs of Ireland’s most famous Dubline.

Tickets are €20 and available from the Parkview, Twizzlers in Bray or on CDKL5.ie.
