At Woodlands GREYSTONES UNITED A CARNEW AFC 1 5

CARNEW put one foot and four toes into the promised land with this comprehensive 1-5 victory over Greystones United at the Woodlands.

Adam Donohue proved inspirational for the visitors as he netted a hat-trick. Darragh Dee and Sean Kenny also chipped in with goals before Jacko O’Brien gave his side a glimmer of hope with a stunning free kick deep into second half stoppage time.

Barely two minutes in, Donohue gave a warning of what was to come as he broke free but United goalkeeper Sean Byrne spread himself well and made the save.

The deadlock was broken in the seventh minute. The ball was chipped into the area and Donohue showed good strength to hold off his man before lifting the ball over Byrne.

Fionn Darcy looked set to make it 0-2 as he ran free of the Greystones defence but just as he looked to pull the trigger, Byrne slid out and timed his tackle to perfection to clear the danger.

Donohue went close again in the ninth minute but his powerful effort cleared the crossbar and four minutes later, he sliced a shot that then kindly rolled into Darragh Dee’s path and the wideman made no mistake as he bulged the netting of the far corner.

Carnew managed a third before the interval. The visitors once again unpicked the lock that was the home defence – Byrne once again was out like a flash but Donohue was ready this time. The attacker stopped, looked up and calmly slotted it beyond the shot-stopper.

Donohue tried to turn provider early in the second half when his pace took him into the box. The angle was too tight for a shot but he squared for a team-mate only for a defender to make a vital interception at the last moment.

Darragh Dee almost created the fourth with a wicked cross from the right flank but Billy Harte made a fine catch to avert the danger.

It was 0-4 in the 46th minute when Greystones were guilty of losing possession in their own box and Sean Kenny punished them with a clever finish.

Another delicious cross from Dee found Callum Ryan but he was unable to convert the opportunity.

Greystones were once again their own worst enemies as sloppy passing in defence laid Donohoe’s third on a plate and he did not pass up the opportunity to land his hat-trick.

Heading into the second leg, Greystones gave their slim hopes a small boost as Jacko O’Brien’s free kick beat the wall and Cian Lancaster to make it 5-1.
