NEWTOWN JUNIORS FC

Unfortunately for our under-14s their final second leg had to be postponed due to the heavy rain that had fallen for most of the week.

However, our 12’s did get to play their second leg at home to Greystones B trailing 2-nil from the first leg. That lead could have been wiped out inside the opening five minutes but Paudie Gammell and Patrick Martin failed to take good chances. The game was an even enough contest and they extended their aggregate lead with a goal halfway through the first half. This didn’t put off the Newtown team who if anything got stronger but they just couldn’t convert the chances they created.

Ten minutes into the second half Keira Farrelly scored a neat goal to restore parity on the day. However, within minutes Greystones went back in front with a similar goal to the first. To their credit and with the tie slipping away Newtown never stopped plugging away and that they did right till the final whistle. Congratulations to Greystones on their win but while we wouldn’t be looking to bestow any moral victories on our team, they all rolled up their sleeves in both games and left it all on the pitch.

Two narrow defeats to Greystones may not mean a lot but this team inflicted a 7-1 defeat on our lads and lassies in the short season so the improvement is there. Continued hard work by the team and the results will start turning. On the day among the players who starred for Newtown were Hannah Martin, Jack Coughlan, Grace Murphy and Eoghan Fox. Well done, everyone.
