World stage beckons for Montessori School pupils after Lego League win
A TEAM of pupils from Wicklow Montessori Primary School are bound for Europe after being crowned the winners of the Institution of Engineering and Technology’s FIRST LEGO League UK and Ireland competition.
Their ‘Airbots’ entry looks at what happens to all the water confiscated at airport security check-ins. Travelling to Dublin airport to monitor behaviour and measure the problem, the pupils came up with a range of recycling solutions from watering plants to washing aeroplanes and even, through the use of special filters, reusing it for drinking.
They took first place at the Core Values category at the competition final last Saturday in Bristol and will now represent Ireland on the global stage when they attend the FIRST LEGO League World Festival in the USA or Hungary in April. Along with 12 other teams, they qualified for international finals. The winning team was made up of Mya Neiland, Hugo SloanKelly, Kiah Savage, Cillian Findlay-Byrne, Nina Braswell, Anna Mooney, James Grant, Lucy McCann and Senan Sloan-Kelly. Their mentors at Wicklow Montessori were Hayley Fitzpatrick and Erica Gallagher.
‘It’s a fantastic achievement by this group of young children involved who have worked really hard throughout the year. The team are looking forward to competing at the World Championships and representing Wicklow and Ireland on a global level,’ said Ms Gallagher.
