RIVER SUCCUMBS TO THE COLD

-

THE BEAST from the East brought many surprises with it, but one talking point in Arklow was how frozen the Avoca River appeared, despite the temperatures not plunging a low as expected.

Many people took to social media to express their surprise at the river which was full of large chunks of ice and snow bobbing along.

Nobody was going to take to the water in such conditions and all local clubs, including Arklow Rowing Club, cancelled their weekend training session.

According to club member and coach Eamonn Kavanagh, it’s not the first time he has seen the river quite so icy.

‘It’s not that unusual to have lumps of ice in the Avoca River and over the years I have seen The Dock freeze. There was heaps of snow in it over the past few days. Nonetheless we decided it best to cancel training but we will be back in action this weekend,’ he said.
