Councillors pay tribute to a number of people who died
TRIBUTES were paid to the late
Emma Hannigan and Garech de
Brún at Monday’s meeting of Wicklow County Council.
Renowned author Emma Hannigan was born and bred in Bray and passed away, aged just 45, on March 3 after a brave battle against cancer.
Cathaoirleach Cllr Edward Timmins, said: ‘She was a great ambassador for Wicklow and Bray and did a lot of good work in relation to the book she did on cancer.’
Cllr Tom Fortune said Mrs Hannigan was ‘a special lady who deserves a lot of recognition and who went through a lot of suffering.’
On behalf of the La Touche Legacy, of which Garech de Brún was President, Cllr Grainne McLoughlin passed on her condolences to his family.
‘We were only just up with him in Luggala Estate recently and he was in fine form.’
Cllr Jim Ruttle said he had gotten to know Mr de Brún well over recent years.
‘He was highly associated with Irish music and culture. He was a unique and one-off person.’
Cllr John Snell paid tribute to the late Bridget Hynes who passed away in Roscommon. She was the wife of the late Frank Hynes, a former Chairman of Wicklow County Council.
‘Frank was a much-respected public representative for decades. Bridget passed away at 100 years of age in Roscommon,’ said Cllr Snell.
Cllr Tommy Cullen said: ‘Frank Hynes was a stalwart of the Labour party and chairman of this council. He was a great servant to the people of Wicklow.’
Cllr Gail Dunne led the tributes to Seamus ‘Sham’ Furlong, the Honorary President of St Patrick’s GAA Club, who passed away aged 91.
Cllr Gerry O’Neill took time to reflect on the five deaths that occurred in west Wicklow during the height of the recent snowy weather.
‘Some of the funerals were delayed for up to eight days which presented more hardship for the families involved.’
