Rathnew in control against Ashford

-

at Shamrock Park RATHNEW U-14S ASHFORD ROVERS 7 0

RATHNEW’S under-14s were in fine form on last weekend as they put seven goals past league rivals Ashford Rovers at Shamrock Park on Saturday afternoon.

It was a wet and windy afternoon at Shamrock Park on Saturday, the pitch had to be reviewed by WDSL officials before the game but thankfully the game went ahead as it was an excellent performance from the home side.

Rathnew got off to the perfect start after only two minutes on the clock with a goal from Ethan Power. Ryan O’ Toole was clipped during his run just after the centre circle, the defender drove his free kick towards goal with a powerful strike but Ashford keeper Luke Moran could only manage to parry the ball out to Power who made no mistake and finished off O’ Toole’s strike to put his side 1-0 up.

Ashford had started getting into the game and began putting some pressure on the Rathnew defence through some long balls to attackers Ben Meade and Dylan Doyle. But as they started to gain some confidence Rathnew flattened that confidence as they grabbed another goal just before half time.

Midfielder Scott Devlin went on a great run down the left wing and drew out the Ashford defence.

As the Ashford defence tried to regain possession Adam Byrne went unmarked in behind the Ashford defence, Devlin picked him out and the strike made no mistake and slotted the ball past Luke Moran.

Unfortunately for the travelling side things did not get better in the second half as again just as they did after the whistle in the first half they scored again after the whistle to begin the second half. This time it was Ethan Power who grabbed the third goal of the game on the 42nd minute with a sweet strike.

Two more goals from Jack Gregory finalised the full three points as the midfielder grabbed a brace with two fine finishes on the 50th and 52nd minute to put his side 5-0 up with little time remaining for the away side to try make a comeback.

Two final goals from substitute Daniel Mbuzu and Zach O’ Connor put the final nail in the coffin as they strolled to an incredible 7-0 victory.

Ashford didn’t let their heads drop even after going 4-0 down and did try get something out of the game but its Rathnew who go away the happier side with a great win over their league rivals.
