GAA CLUB NOTES

Newtown GAA is driven by the incredible work carried out by many wonderful volunteers, young and old, male and female, from every single walk of life, some of who are listed below. Being involved in the GAA gives a sense of fulfilment which is unrivalled. It brings membership of the biggest club in Ireland, puts one right at the heart of Irish culture and provides a pastime for every member of the family. If you feel you can help out in any capacity for any period of time please get in touch with Dave McCormick or email secretarybng.newtown.wicklow@GAA.ie We are particularly looking for volunteers for under-seven GO Games.

Congratulations to Dave McCormick who was elected to the role of Juvenile chairman this week and to Sharon McCormick who was appointed as the new Children’s Officer. Some of the supporting current mentors/ coaches are.

Boys: under-11 – Peter Heffernan and Ruari Martin under-13 – Peter Heffernan and Ruari Martin and Pat Carthy under-15 – Shane Mooney; Karl Carty, Glen Carthy under-17 – In Group team with Pearse Gaels (Kilcoole and Ashford) Nursery (four- to six-yearold) – Dave McCormick

Best of luck to the under-17s lads who are playing with Pearse Gaels this year and they have their first league match at Newtown on Friday, March 16.

Unfortunately the under-16s girls’ team panel is too low on numbers this year and the club is working with parents to find teams where they can play this year.

A Magpie legend Jack Martin passed away last week. Jack was left full back on the 1964 championship winning team and also played on many Schweppes Cup winning teams. He was one of the most formidable defenders of his generation and was certainly not a player you wanted marking you. Our deepest condolences are with Kathleen, Denise and Anna. May he rest in peace.

Membership fees are now due and again are one of the lowest in the county, there are no changes to the individual fees with Juvenile family fee at €120 and adult family at €200.

The club would like some parents to walk with their kids in the St Patrick’s Day parade, leaving Gregorys Garage at 11.00 on Saturday morning.

Seven people matched three numbers in last week’s lotto, but no jackpot winner, this week’s jackpot rolled over to €5,000. Numbers drawn were 10, 15, 17 and 22.

Follow Newtown GAA on Twitter or Facebook. The club noticeboard is also located in the post office.
