LACK OF A FOOTPATH NEAR LIDL IS A ‘PUBLIC LIABILITY’
COUNCILLORS want a footpath installed along the approach road into Wicklow town for fears someone will fall and injure themselves.
At the most recent meeting of Wicklow Municipal District, Cllr John Snell raised the issue concerning a large section of the road passing by both Heatons and Lidl which doesn’t have a footpath.
‘The Local Authority is waiting for a developer to carry it out but I would urge us to take action,’ said Cllr Snell. ‘It’s impossible for an individual with a wheelchair or an elderly person on a walking frame. In my opinion, it’s a public liability waiting to happen.
‘Should the developer not be asked to do the footpath first? We could do it ourselves and get the developer to pay or get the developer to do it before any other works are carried out.’
Cllr Gail Dunne felt that particular stretch of road with no footpath had been ‘put on the long finger’ for too long.
‘Has there been a commencement notice?’ he asked. ‘If one has been put in, then we could ask the developer to put in the footpath. If not, then I would agree with Cllr Snell that we put in the footpath and then get reimbursed by the developer. Something needs to be done.’
The matter will be looked into and a response will be available at April’s meeting of Wicklow Municipal District.
