Tinahely in control Talented side prove too strong for visiting Rathnew

- BRENDAN LAWRENCE

TINAHELY RATHNEW 2-15 0-4

A wasteful Tinahely Minor football side showed all their power when dispatching a game Rathnew side in the Minor football league on Monday night last in a drenched Tinahely.

The Tinahely lads left at least a similar amount to what they scored out on the field through wides and the goalkeeping heroics of Rathnew netminder Reece Doyle who pulled off some excellent saves in terrible conditions for a football match.

There was something of a gulf between these two teams, with the spine of the Tinahely team a class apart on the evening.

The likes of Daniel Hedderman, Eoghan Byrne (until he left the field injured), the excellent Ruairi Tompkins, and the very impressive Matthew Ging and Eoin Darcy at 11 and 14 respectively caused the Rathnew men all sorts of problems and the 2-7 to 0-3 half-time score meant that the second half was pure damage control of the Village.

However, three red cards in the second half, in a game that had hardly a dirty stroke to be fair, meant Rathnew had no hope of a recovery.

Rathnew started well. Eoin Doyle looked like he was going to cause Cillian McDonald serious problems, but he could only register two wides in the opening two minutes, one from a 45.

Tinahely dealt with this early promise and went on to grab three unanswered points through two placed balls, one from Eoin Darcy, and a free and one from play from Matthew Ging.

Rathnew opened their account through Dylan Smyth from a free after a fou on Eoin Doyle, but with 11 minutes on the clock a lonh Eoghan Byrne ball from the midfield was gathered by the intelligent Eoin Darcy and he turned and slipped it home past Reece Doyle.

Eoghan Byrne and Ruairi Tompkins added two more excellent scores before the home side registered five wides as they gained complete control around the middle of the field.

Ging off the left and Eoin Darcy’s second goal killed the game off as a contest and Tinahely took the half-time break leading by 2-7 to 0-3 with Smyth and Eoin Doyle grabbing Rathnew’s other two points.

Rathnew had tried moves in the opening half. They had pulled Tristan O’Toole back to try curb Darcy’s attacking threat. After the break they introduced three substitutes and sent Sean Coffey on to the edge of the square for a time.

Tinahely added two points from Darcy, from a free, and Tompkins while Jenson O’Connor grabbed Rathnew’s only score of the second half.

The red cards began arriving then and by the time Tinahely had completed their tally of 2-15, Rathnew were down to 12 men and were just trying to stem the flow.
