TIDY TOWNS
With the invaluable help and efforts of the community, every year Newcastle’s performance in the Tidy Towns competition has improved. We believe that our entry and voluntary efforts enhances awareness of this special place, and the pride we all take in it. Join us for a kick-off Village Clean-Up Day on Saturday, April 21, meeting at 10.00 at the Castle Inn carpark, finishing up at 11.45 with tea and coffee in the Country Market in the community centre.
The village and its surrounds received lots of positive comments from the judge last year, particularly in relation to its tidiness and lack of litter. A lot of this is due to enhanced awareness by the school children who do an annual beach clean and are highly aware of picking up litter around the village.
Areas where we could improve on our 2017 performance relate to the category on Sustainable Waste and Resources Management. Newcastle is not unique and many other villages across Ireland scored poorly in this regard.
To address this shortfall we are looking for ideas from anyone and everyone on how to manage our waste more effectively, and on how to enhance the management of our natural resources. If you have ideas please forward to careyml@eircom.net or 087 2381060.
Newcastle is a very special village. Let’s all work towards its enhancement as a place to live. We look forward to seeing you on Saturday.
Just a few more results from our younger members from the community games: Girls - U6 Clodagh Phelan 2nd, U8 Ava O’Connor 3rd, U10 Emma Byrne 3rd; Boys U8 Will Phelan 3rd, U10 Luke Wilson 2nd. Great running from Ciara and Helen Winterbottom, Ella and Ava Breen and Leah Barrett.
