Big results for local athletes in recent weeks

-

THERE were some superb performances by Wicklow athletes in recent weeks under the flag of Slí Cualann.

Catherine O’Connor claimed a bronze medal in the Bupa 10k race in the Phoenix Park at the end of April while Catherine and her team mates Ashling Smyth, Laura McCann claimed victory in the Leinster Masters Road Race in both the team and county categories. The girls were joined on that team by Jean Kennedy.

Not alone did Catherine O’Connor win the overall event but she also finished first in the O-40 category with Ashling Smyth taking the title in the O-45s and Jean Kennedy storming home in the O-55s.

The Slí Cualann men’s team of Ray Kenny, Gordon Williams, Bill Porter, Tony Gartland and John Baldwin claimed a credibly fourth place in the O-50s category.

Last weekend saw a massive crowd descend on Charlesland in Greystones for the Wicklow Track and Field Championships for 2018. Over 700 medals were handed out over the two days as competitors from all over the county competed in a host of events in beautiful weather.

Bill Porter said that he was delighted with the turnout over the weekend and wished to thank everybody who helped out in any way and he congratulated all the competitors for their efforts.

Next up is the Wicklow Hospice 10k which gets underway at the Beehive on Saturday morning at 9am.
