Hard-working locals honoured
THERE was a great turnout at the Nell Healy People of the Year awards recently in Phil Healy’s Pub.
The Sports Club Person of the Year was awarded to Anthony Earls, who is one of the founder members of Wicklow Rovers. Anthony has worked tirelessly for his club and is a true ambassador for his club.
Pat Byrne won the Arts and Culture Award. Pat is a founder member of the renowned Wicklow Male Voice Choir and has been MC for the St Vincent de Paul Christmas concert for the last 32 years. He is also a regular contributor to entertainment for patients in local hospitals.
International Person of the Year went to Theo Phelan, who is immediately associated with the Around Ireland yacht race. Theo is one of the main organisers of the event which takes place over ten days.
Eileen Earls and Margaret Kavanagh were the joint winners of the Community Support Person of the Year Award. Eileen was chosen for her outstanding work for Wicklow Cancer support, where she gives so much of her time, while Margaret has been involved in Meals on Wheels for almost 30 years.
Liz Collard won the Community Support Award. Liz is a designated driver for patients to and from hospital for Wicklow Cancer Support. She is also the main organiser of upgrades to local families homes.
Wicklow Tidy Towns received an award for the time they give to the town. The group has made huge strides year on year in the national Tidy Town’s competition.
Young Person of the Year award went to Mark Nicholson who has represented Wicklow Rugby club, Leinster and Ireland in rugby. He is dedicated to his sport and a role model to his peers.
The final award went to Wicklow RNLI, who received a special award in recognition of its dedication to saving lives at sea and for volunteerism.
