JCSP CELEBRATIONS
The celebrations took place last Friday, May 11, to mark the JCSP students’ achievements during the year. Awards were presented at 12.30 and at 2 p.m. students were treated to a storytelling workshop with Niall de Burca which they thoroughly enjoyed. This was a lovely occasion for both students and teachers alike, giving the students a real sense of achievement and confidence as they prepare for their summer Exams and Junior Certificate.
BAKE SALE
Well done to the students of two Bann, who hosted a bake sale on Thursday and Friday at lunch time in the Canteen in aid of Mental Health Ireland. Thank you to everyone who supported this worthy cause, it is much appreciated.
PENALTY SHOOT-OUT
On Monday, May 14, students from two Foyle held a penalty shoot out, using an inflatable penalty shoot with different targets to hit and awarding prizes to the top scorers. The money raised will be donated to help a local child with a condition called SCN2A, a condition that effects mobility and speech. Thank you to the tudents who organised this event and to all who participated.
GAISCE PRESIDENT’S AWARD
Eight fifth years hiked 50km over three days from Ballinastoe to Glenmalure as part of the Silver Gaisce president’s Award. The hike was challenging in parts and the bad weather last Wednesday presented even more challenges. However, the students pushed through and remained positive throughout and some of the views were worth the pain. The staff from Baltinglass Education Centre complimented their excellent behaviour and motivation. Well done to all, you should be very proud of your success.
GET ACTIVE WEEK
Last week the PE department organised a wide range of events to mark Get Active Week in the school including the Climb a Mountain Skipping Challenge and Walk a Mile with a Smile. Every lunchtime activities such as sprint trials, tug o’war, penalty shoot-outs and, on Friday, a Bleep Test Trio Relay Challenge took place. Prizes were awarded to the winners of each competition but the focus of the week was really about encouraging the whole school community, teachers and students, to lead more active and healthy lives. Well done to all who participated and to the PE department for the organisation of a highly successful and enjoyable week.
FIRST YEAR SPORTS DAY
As part of Get Active Week, First year Sports Day took place on Thursday, May 10, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. This was a really fun event catering for all levels of fitness and ability and included a wide range of fun and interesting activities like welly throwing, poc fada and mini races. Very well done to all the participants and winners, and to the mentors, who ensured the organisation and smooth running of the event.
GIRLS’ RUGBY
Congratulations to Laura Newsome, Ciara Brennan, Lara Reilly, Sarah Carroll and Casey Scott, members of the Wicklow Rugby Club under-16 girls’ Team, who were winners of this year’s Leinster under-16 Premier Cup Final and the under-16 South East Final. The girls have played 19 games undefeated and this has been a terrific season for them all. Well done to all on a fantastic achievement.
BASKETBALL
To celebrate the CCM Senior Girls’ team winning the Division 4 League this year, they played a match against the CCM Senior Boys’ team on Friday, May 4. The boys’ team were on edge before the game hoping they would be able to do enough to beat the Division 4 winners. Both teams put it all in from the start but the boys’ height was a great advantage and stopped several of the girls’ shots and passes. It also helped with the rugby style line out basket they scored in the second quarter.
The girls put up a great fight with Alba Galban, Emma Cruise and Siobhán Irons scoring under a lot of pressure. There were great performances on the boys’ team from Sam Porter, Jack Gibney and Patrick Nixon. All the students involved enjoyed the game and there was even talk at the end about making it an annual event in CCM.
GIRLS’ GAA BLITZ
On Thursday, April 26, the junior girls GAA travelled to Ballinakill to play in the County Schools’ Gaelic Football Blitz. Our girls faced tough competition from St Kevin’s, Glenart and Gaelcholáiste na Mara. First up for CCM was St Kevin’s and we started off strong with some brilliant saves from our keeper, Hannah Murray. Unfortunately, the wind was against us for the second half and, despite some lovely shots from our front row, we couldn’t get over the bar.
Up next for our girls was Gaelcholáiste na Mara, who had emerged as clear winners on their first round. Again our girls put up a good performance against a team who were a strong force. Our back line had their work cut out with Sarah Carroll and Amy O’Doherty making some tough tackles. Millie Tierney and Keela Dunne played a cracking first half. Despite a second loss in a row our girls went into their third round in high spirits.
Finally their hard work paid off and our front line, made up of Casey Scott, Orla Kenny and Lauren Stapleton, all found the net and got a few points over the bar. Well done to all the girls.
FIRST YEAR FOOTBALL
CCM won a high scoring game against a strong Dunlavin team in the First year Gaelic ‘Football A’ semifinal last Tuesday. CCM started well and were 1-3 to no score before Dunlavin scored 6-3 without response. Toby Lee Curran, Scott Devlin and Joseph Neilan scored and we trailed by eight points at half time. The second half saw CCM take control and excellent performances from Adam Ralph, Alex Sinnot, James O’Donnell Adam Kelly and Conor Luddy helped with the comeback. Dunlavin fought back and it was level with five minutes remaining. Toby Lee, who scored 4-8, sealed the win with late points which saw us win by seven on a final score of 7-17 to 8-7. We now face Carnew in the final next week.

Other fine performances came from Aimee Bell King, grabbing a bronze in the 1500m and the Javelin and qualifying for the Leinster’s, while her sister, Bonnie, ran and threw exceptionally well and clinched fourth in the same two events.

On Day two, the challenge was raised. Ewan Carr Culbert met the challenge and produced another magnificent display of sprinting, finishing a close second, and earning another qualification to the Leinster Championships.
The performance of the day, for a one-off run, must go to Finn Egan Barron, who fought all the way to the line to finish second.
Well done to Joe and Tom O’Shea were so very close to making it through to the Leinster’s, finishing fourth and seventh respectively.
Other fine performances came from Conor Luddy, Siobhain Irons, Emma Cruise, Caoilfhionn Ni Dhubhslaine, Malwina Wesolowska, Kevin Jameson, Mark Whelan, Dale Johnson Barker and Vlady Antonov as well as the Senior Boys’ and Junior Girls’ relay teams.
