Concert

The Wicklow Choral Society’s May concert will take place on at 8 p.m. onSunday, May 27, in St Patrick’s Church, Wicklow town.

The choir will sing two joyful and uplifting works: Vivaldi’s ‘Gloria’ and Dan Forrest’s ‘Jubilate Deo’.

Dan Forrest is a young American composer and his ‘Jubilate Deo’ will have people dancing in the aisles. It is a setting of Psalm 100 which draws from a wide range of musical influences from around the world. The work is sung in seven different languages as a gesture of the unity between cultures.

Young sopranos Katie Richardson McCrea and Jade Phoenix from Greystones will sing the solo roles.

Tickets cost €15 and will be available at the door or at Earl’s Newsagents.

Tennis club

Best of luck to Wicklow Tennis Club’s three ladies and three men’s teams participat­ing in the Dublin Lawn Tennis Council Summer League. Matches started last weekend and will run for the next five weeks.

Social Tennis for members aged 14 and over continues each Monday at 7.30 p.m. No need to register just drop in, entry is €2.

Fun Tennis for junior members is on Wednesdays from 3.15 p.m. to 4 p.m. for four to eight year olds and from 4 p.m. to 4.45 p.m. for eight to 13 year olds. Drop in and entry is just €2.

Free lessons for new members with coaches John Brady and Ashley Wynne are under way and the adult new members lessons are at 12.30 p.m. to 1.30 p.m. on Saturday.

Chair yoga

Due to funding from the Wicklow Local Sports Partnershi­p more chair yoga classes have been added to Louise’s schedule and a reduced class fee is offered.

Classes take place on Mondays and Fridays in The Ananta Yoga Studios, Wicklow town, from noon to 1 p.m.; on Tuesdays at Aughrim Sports Complex, (AAR) from 10.30 a.m. to 11.30 a.m.; on Wednesdays at Arus Lorain, Arklow from 11 a.m. to 12 noon; and on Thursdays at the Brockagh Resource Centre, Laragh from 11.30 a.m. to 12.30 p.m.

Rugby AGM

Wicklow Rugby Club will hold the club’s Annual General Meeting on Thursday, May 31, at 8 p.m. in Ashtown Lane. The date for submitting any motions has already passed.

Seminar

There will be an Employment Law, GDPR, HR and Health and Safety seminar in the Grand Hotel, Wicklow on Tuesday, June 12.

This compliment­ary event, organised in associatio­n with Peninsula, will provide the knowledge and tools needed to manage these issues effectivel­y.

Gymboree

Gymboree Play and Music Classes take place every Tuesday morning at 11 a.m. in Glenealy Village Hall and are suitable for babies, toddlers and pre-schoolers from six months to four years.

Children will develop a love of music through songs, dance, movement fun and musical instrument­s, exploring various different musical styles. Booking is essential as places are limited.

Barn dance

Moneystown Midsummer barn dance and barbecue will take place on June 30 in Moneystown Community Centre starting at 8 p.m. till late.

Music will be provided by the always-popular Roamin Cadiliacs and the Whole Hog.

Historical Society

Wicklow Historical Society’s 2018 Journal should hit the shelves in June.

The journal will include articles on Life in Wicklow a Century Ago, Tragedy Over Wicklow Bay and Goodbye to Delahunt’s by John Finlay, Wicklow During the Emergency by James Scannell, Letters from Mountjoy 1921, the Autograph Books of Arthur Fitzpatric­k and Pat McCrea, ‘The Men Will Talk to me’ by Ben Fagan, Francis Wakefield, an over eager benefactor or misguided philanthro­pist? by Vincent O’ Reilly, the Story of Mike Hawthorn, ‘From Leinster Trophy to World Formula One Racing Champion’ by Anthony Byrne and ‘Wicklow’s Fishing Industry’ by Stan J. O’ Reilly.

The society wishes to thank all their supporters, helpers, patrons and those who kindly lend us their old photograph­s.

The society has launched its annual patron’s drive. It is making an appeal for annual patronage as, without continued support and financial assistance, it would find it very difficult to continue the publicatio­ns. To be come a patron, contact any society member or call Stan on 0404 67494.

Taste of Wicklow

The Taste of Wicklow will be taking place over two days this year and incorporat­e both a music and food festival.

The festival kicks off on Saturday, June 30, with a music event from 5 p.m. until 10 p.m. in the Abbey Grounds.

On Sunday, July 1, Taste of Wicklow takes place in the Abbey Grounds from noon until 7 p.m. with celebrity chefs Catherine Fulvio, Kevin Dundon and Paul Kelly in the Main Marquee plus local chefs.

There will be lots of family fun for all with entertainm­ent, music and plenty of food stalls.

Bumble bee workshop

A Bumble Bee Workshop takes place in the Wicklow Mountains National Park on Sunday, May 27, 11 a.m. The morning starts with a talk in the Education Centre, where participan­ts will learn about the bees’ natural history and how to identify the species. This will be followed by a walk to try and identify some bees out in the wild. The is a free event but pre-booking is essential by calling 0404 45425 or 0404 45656.
