Tremendous Calary music line-up

THE Music in Calary programme for 2018 has been announced with concerts taking place from May to October.

Each year a number of different music events are held in Calary Church, with an emphasis on young, local talent.

The first concert of the year takes place on Sunday, May 27, when Musici Ireland will play Brahms and Mozart clarinet quintets. The artists performing will be Mia Cooper and Siun Milne (violin), Beth McNinch (viola), Katie Tertell (cello) and Conor Sheil (clarinet).

On Thursday, June 28, Sean Carpio (drums), Mikkel Ploug (guitar) Simon Jermyn (guitar), Jeppe Skovbakke (bass), and Joachim Badenhorst (clarinet) will play a concert of original music that will speak about the places of its origin, including Calary, in order to present a complex yet nuanced concert experience transformi­ng musical elements of speech into music.

On Sunday, July 22, Lorna Breen (soprano), Andrew Gavin (tenor) and Mairéad Hurley (accompanis­t) will per-form Opera arias, Irish Airs and pieces by Gilbert and Sullivan. The concert will follow an optional supper in aid of Sister Mary Killeen’s work in Mukuru slums in Nairobi.

Sarah Power (soprano) will be accompanie­d by Andrea Linsbauer (piano) on Friday, September 7. Ella Nagy will join them with piano solos. Ella is another very promising young Irish pianist.

The Janet Ashe Memorial Concert is lined up for Wednesday, September 12. Fiachra Garvey (piano) will play works by Brahms, Chopin, Field and Rachmanino­v, which he will also be performing in Germany three days later and at various UK festivals.

Miriam Roycroft (cello) and Lance Coburn (piano) will play works by Beethoven, Chopin, Martinu and Moeran on Friday, September 14.

Finally, on Friday, October 5, Musici Ireland will play, among other pieces, bassoon quartets by Stamitz and Danzi. The artists performing will be Mia Cooper (violin), Beth McNinch (viola), Bill Butt (cello) and John Hearne (Bassoon).

Tickets for each event cost €18, or only €15 with a concession.
