AVONDALE DELIGHT

Small numbers but football the winner in Ballinakill

- BRENDAN LAWRENCE

THERE might have only been four teams at the Under-17 sevens tournament in Ballinakill on Monday evening last but there was some lovely football played and all four teams have looked for a second date to be found in the coming weeks and that is surely a vote of confidence for the fledgling enterprise.

Wicklow GAA’s Games Manager Hugh Kenny was the man at the helm at the center of excellence on Monday and he said the event, primarily for smaller clubs with players not tied down with Junior Certs exams and the likes, was a success overall with plenty of potential going forward.

Avondale were the winners of the tournament on the night with captain Zach Cullen collecting the trophy after their 4-8 to 1-5 victory over Barndarrig. Football was the ultimate winner, however, with the standard improving as the evening progressed and the teams who might not have won many or any games leaving the venue having felt the benefits of the competition and hungry for more.
