Hundreds compete

TWO-HUNDRED-AND-FOUR swimmers took to the waters last Sunday as Wicklow Swimming Club hosted its second week of racing on one of the hottest days of the summer so far.

The first event to take place was the junior sprints, with 46 swimmers competing. The winners were: Under 6 Boys – first, Dara Colohan, second, Dobhran Whelehan, third, Jasper Baltrusaitis; Under 6 Girls – first, Aoife Quinn, second, Maria O’Dwyer, third, Olivia Guinan; Under 8 Boys – first, Tristan McKeever, second, Ryan Cassidy, third, Patrick Treanor; Under 8 Girls – first, Saorla Hartley, second, Lucy Carey, third, Olivia Guinan; Under 10 Boys – first, Ryan Quinn, second, Ben Fry, third, Seamus Treanor; Under 10 Girls – first, Sadhbh Hartley, second, Anya McKenna, third, Aoibheann Hartley; Under 12 Boys, first, John Aherne, second, Jacob Fry, third, Colm O’Neill; Under 12 Girls – first, Cara McKenna, second, Juno Cherry Roberts, third, Caoimhe Doherty; Under 14 Girls – first, Maya Kelly, second, Emma Seckington and third, Ellie Mai Brennan.

Twenty-nine young swimmers took part in the Junior Challenge, with Mya Kelly finishing first, followed by Ben Fry in second place and Suzie Gurrie in third.

Sixteen intermediates went up against one another for the Jack Malone Cup. Amy Noble was the winner, with Roisin Vize second and Joss Hulin in third place.

Fifteen youths competed for the Binnon Cup. Nathan O’Connor finished in first spot, with Lily Devitt second and Padraig Cahill third.

Ninety-eight seniors swam for the inaugural O’Flaherty Family Cup. Claire Moelders took first place with Ross Beacom coming home in second, followed by Leslie Martin in third.

The first of the mid-week races will take place today, Wednesday, June 13, starting with the Intermediates Clarke Delahunt Cup at 6.45 p.m. followed by the seniors racing for the AIB Cup at 7.15 p.m.

On Sunday, June 17, races start at 10.15 a.m. with the junior sprints, 10.30 a.m. for the junior challenge, 11 a.m. for the intermediates and the Humby Family Cup, 11.30 a.m. for the Youths Committee Cup and 12 noon for the seniors race for the Humby family Cup.
