Ashford raises fifth green flag

- By ESTHER HAYDEN

THERE was great celebrations in Ashford National School recently as the school’s fifth green flag was hoisted.

Principal Conan Daye said it had a fantastic day which was really enjoyed by all the children.

‘This is our fifth green flag and we received this for our work on biodiversity. We are already working on attaining our sixth flag which is for Global Citizenship.’

Mr Daye said that the school has a dedicated and hard working green school committee which has elected representatives from each of the classes and is headed up by teacher Martina McDermott who has been involved in the project for the past ten years.

‘The whole day was amazing’, said Mr Daye. ‘The council got invovled and the peace proms performed. Minister Simon Harris raised the flag for us and I couldn’t speak highly enough of him. He gave us great time and spoke to the children at length answering all their questions.

‘He really made the day for us’. Mr Daye paid tribute to the work carried out by the committee led by Ms McDermott and also praised the work of school caretaker, Patrick Curley.

‘Everyone in the school puts a lot of effort into the work needed to gain a green flag and it really is a whole school effort’, he said.

‘It was great to see the children’s hard work paying off at the raising of the new flag.’
